Road Safety Council Urges Responsible Driving

The Bermuda Road Safety Council has expressed deep concern following recent fatal road traffic collisions and a rise in DUI-related incidents over the Christmas holiday period, urging motorists to act responsibly and prioritise safety as the New Year approaches.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Road Safety Council extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who have recently lost their lives in road traffic collisions. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this period of profound loss.

“The Bermuda Road Safety Council is extremely concerned by the recent press release reporting a number of driving under the influence [DUI] arrests and an increase in road traffic collisions over the Christmas holiday period. This season is intended to be a time of rest, reflection and togetherness with loved ones, yet it has been overshadowed by avoidable tragedy.

“The Bermuda Road Safety Council fully supports the appeals made by the Minister of National Security, the Minister of Health, and Sergeant Helen McHugh of the Bermuda Police Service, all of whom have called on the public to exercise caution and responsibility while using the road network. Their statements reinforce the importance of individual accountability in improving road safety outcomes.

“The Council strongly encourages all road users to make responsible and informed decisions when travelling. Motorists who intend to consume alcohol are urged to plan ahead and make appropriate arrangements to return home safely, rather than driving while impaired.

“In addition, all motorists are reminded to reduce their speeds, remain vigilant and ensure their full attention is devoted to driving at all times. Reckless, distracted and impaired driving continues to pose a serious threat to public safety.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility. Every road user has a role to play in preventing collisions and saving lives. As the New Year’s holiday approaches, the Bermuda Road Safety Council urges all motorists to make a firm resolution to improve their driving behaviours and to prioritise safety on our roads.

“Through responsible choices and a shared commitment to road safety, we can work together to reduce collisions and protect our community.”

  1. Road safety who? says:

Who is the Road Safety Council? I’ve seen them on the news, I see they make statements about safe road use, but what do they really do? Is there any action behind this council? Why are there so many issues on our roads? Unpainted center lines, reduced sight lines on north and south roundabouts at Trimmingham Hill (think about it – why are there trees on the roundabout?), traffic lights that take a long time to change and then only two cars can make it through the light – that tempts people to run the light anyway. There are some crossings that need those pedestrian lights more than others – especially the one by the railway on Rural Hill … that one, pedestrians pop up from behind the wall and you don’t see them until it’s almost too late. We all know there are so many more roads that need to be paved – especially South Road between Warwick Gas Station and Modern Mart and Middle Road,Warwick -the latter was promised since 2017. Tee Street is a bad area on both ends. Why is there no mirror on the South Road end of Tee Street? You take a risk every time you exit that hill and turn West – a mirror would help. Anyway, I could go on and on but I won’t. My point is: The Road Safety Council needs to take action, words are not enough!
