Sean Trott will compete in the Butterfield Mile elite men’s race on Front Street for the first time on Friday [January 16].

The 35-year-old, who won his maiden Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby title last year, has been invited to contest all three elite races – the Mile, the Allshores 10K, and the PwC Bermuda Half-Marathon – as part of the Chubb Half Bermuda Triangle Challenge.

Joining Trott on the start line in the mile will be fellow Bermudians Ryan Outerbridge and Kallan Richardson.

“Coming on the heels of my May 24 win, a lot of new opportunities have opened to me,” Trott told Bernews.

“Other than May 24, the Butterfield Mile is the biggest event of our running season. It brings in a lot of people, and I enjoy that environment.”

Trott said his primary focus will be Saturday’s 10K and acknowledged that the mile is not his preferred distance.

“I don’t consider myself elite in the mile, but the organisers want a broader approach with local runners, and I’m happy with the invite,” said Trott, whose personal best for the mile is 4min 45sec.

“I was going to run the mile [local men's race] whether I was invited or not.”

Trott, who represented Bermuda at the International Island Games in Orkney, Scotland, last summer in the 10,000 metres and half-marathon, finished ninth in last year’s 10K in 33:43.

“Hopefully, I can improve on both my time and my placing in the 10K,” he said.

“I’ll take a disciplined approach and reassess after Saturday’s race. If I need to pull out of the half-marathon to protect my legs, I will.”

Trott added his main objective this season is defending his May 24 title.

“I also want to improve my times over the 5K and 10K distances,” he added.

The elite men’s Butterfield Mile race starts at 7.55pm.
