Somersfield Students To Showcase IB Projects
Somersfield Academy’s M5 students will showcase their International Baccalaureate [IB] Middle Years Programme learning at the annual Personal Project Exhibition, highlighting creativity, independent inquiry, and year-long student-led projects.
A spokesperson said, “Somersfield Academy’s M5 students will present the culmination of their International Baccalaureate [IB] Middle Years Programme [MYP] learning at the annual Personal Project Exhibition, held in the Somersfield Academy Gymnasium. The exhibition celebrates independent inquiry, creativity, and sustained commitment and forms a key component of Bermuda’s only IB MYP programme. Somersfield welcomes students from other schools to attend and experience the exhibition.
“New this year is an audience voting component, inviting visitors to recognise categories such as most original idea and outstanding craftsmanship, encouraging meaningful engagement with student learning.
“Each Personal Project represents a year-long process in which students explore a topic of personal interest, set a learning goal, conduct research, and produce a final product supported by reflection and action.
“Over the years, the exhibition has drawn strong interest from Bermuda’s wider community. Past exhibitions have been attended by leaders and professionals from the arts, business, environmental, engineering, and cultural sectors, including representatives from the Bermuda National Gallery, Greenrock, the Bermuda Zoological Society, Argus, and the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. This ongoing involvement reflects the real-world relevance and high standard of student work.
“Julie Yoon has returned for her second year as M5 Personal Project Coordinator and is inviting students from Years P4 through M4 at other schools to visit the exhibition as part of a planned school outing. Exposure to the exhibition allows younger students to see inquiry-based learning in action, gain insight into long-term projects, and feel inspired as they begin imagining future learning pathways of their own.”
“Visitors to the Personal Project Exhibition are invited to do more than just observe,” said Julie Yoon, M5 Personal Project Coordinator. “During the opening evening reception, community members, friends, and families will have the opportunity to engage directly with students and offer informal feedback by voting for a small set of audience choice recognitions.”
The spokesperson said, “Teachers interested in arranging a visit should contact Julie Yoon at jyoon@somersfield.bm to coordinate attendance.”
“Introducing audience awards adds a meaningful layer of community engagement to the Personal Project Exhibition,” said Cathy Schlei, IB Curriculum Coordinator. “It encourages students to communicate their learning clearly, invites visitors to reflect thoughtfully on the work they see, and helps students understand the value of audience feedback in real-world contexts.”
The spokesperson said, “The Personal Project Exhibition celebrates student voice, independence, and curiosity, while strengthening connections between schools, families, and the wider community.
