[Updated] Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport Owen Darrell has accepted an invitation to compete in the Bermuda Motocross Association’s Celebrity Motocross Race this Sunday.

Bernews asked the Minister about his participation and he said, “The Bermuda Motocross Association did officially invite me to take part in the Celebrity Motocross Race on February 8, and I couldn’t turn that down. As the Minister responsible for sport, I’ve always said that Sport Matters. Supporting sport isn’t only about grants and budgets; it’s also about showing up, being present, and celebrating the athletes and volunteers who keep these traditions alive.

“Over the past three budgets, this Government has increased funding for sport in Bermuda, and I’ve made it a priority to support all 26 National Sport Governing Bodies, including the BMA. I’ve been to the track several times, and for the past two years, I’ve taken my son to watch races at Coney Island. I genuinely enjoy being at sporting events of every kind, and motocross is one of those uniquely Bermudian pastimes that brings generations together.

“What I love most is the family atmosphere, fathers and sons working on bikes, mothers and aunties cheering from the sidelines, officials and volunteers making race day run smoothly. It’s a community effort, and it’s been that way for decades.

“This weekend’s race is a fundraiser for the Association, and I hope the involvement of local personalities encourages people who may not usually attend motocross to come out and experience it.”

Bernews asked the Minister if he might deck out during the race, and he said, “I won’t pretend to be a seasoned motocross rider, but I do have experience on a motorbike. I’ll be taking all the necessary safety precautions, and I’m confident I won’t deck out… although a little excitement is part of the fun.

“So, I encourage everyone to come out this Sunday and support the Bermuda Motocross Association. And I’ll just add, in good fun, that I fully intend to win,” he added.

Update: The organisers said the event has been postponed to February 22nd.
