The Bermuda College Eco Club will be hosting a fundraiser screening of The Plastic Detox Documentary on Friday [April 10] at the Athene Lecture Hall.

A spokesperson said, “The community is invited to attend this fundraiser for Bermuda College Eco Club on Friday, April 10th at the Athene Lecture Hall at the Bermuda College campus. The documentary will start at 6.00pm, followed by a lively panel discussion to increase your awareness by Eric Hetzel [Beyond Plastic], Dr. Andrew Dhanoo [Bermuda College], and other key stakeholders. All proceeds go to Bermuda College Eco Club members traveling in May to Bahamas on a sustainability stewardship opportunity.

“Exposure to plastics and chemicals associated with them is leading to health issues such as reduction in fertility, links to increased obesity and diabetes, heart disease, and mental health decline as well as dementia. It is a topic our community needs to be made aware of so they can make informed decisions about their consumption behaviour as well as being able to feel empowered about their health. This documentary builds hope around the issue as it shows that we can indeed turn things around if we make simple changes.”

Erich Hetzel, representing Beyond Plastics, said, “Many people don’t realize that plastics are linked to a wide range of global issues—not just visible harms like turtles affected by plastic waste. The impacts of plastics extend across social justice, environmental issues, economic impacts, climate change, and public health.

“The film Plastic Detox highlights one specific concern: declining fertility rates. Its creator, Dr. Shanna Swan, has published major studies and a book on how exposure to plastic-related chemicals and others are reducing fertility rates. Plastic Detox is her latest effort to raise public awareness about a serious, but potentially manageable crisis.”

Dr. Andrew Dhanoo, Biology Lecturer at Bermuda College, said, “The growing body of research on microplastics and endocrine-disrupting chemicals highlights a concerning link between environmental exposure and metabolic health. These substances have been shown to alter hormonal signaling pathways, potentially increasing susceptibility to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and reduced reproductive health. The extent of these effects, however, we are only now beginning to understand. We must not only consider addressing plastic pollution for environmental sustainability, but also because of its potential influence on the development of chronic Non-Communicable Diseases [NCDs] in our communities.”

Amy Harvey, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science and Bermuda College Eco Club Mentor, said, “BC Eco Club and our members are a very active part of the greater Bermuda community holding events that aim to raise awareness about critical environmental issues that affect both our local and global community. Our members are advocates that are passionate about making the difference.

“They work hard and I hope the Bermuda community will embrace this event as well as support ongoing initiatives that we have. These events help us to achieve our mission of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable behaviours.”

The spokesperson said, “General admission is $25, which includes a bag of popcorn and a drink. Tickets can be bought in advance at ptix.bm. The documentary will start at 6.00pm, followed by panel discussion until 8.30pm. Doors will open from 5.30pm.
