Government officials, community members and figures from the football community turned out to support the premiere of the new Clyde Best documentary this week.

The feature-length documentary Transforming the Beautiful Game – The Clyde Best Story was screened at City Hall’s Earl Cameron Theatre.

The film charts Best’s career from joining West Ham United in the late 1960s to his move to the United States, where he played in the then-burgeoning North American Soccer League with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Portland Timbers, as well as a spell with Feyenoord in the Netherlands.

It also explores the wider issue of racism in football.

Among those in attendance were Premier David Burt, Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport Owen Darrell, Speaker of the House Dennis Lister, Bermuda Football Association President Mark Wade, David Sabir, Dr Dana Selassie and many more people/

Best told Bernews: “Everything I’ve ever done isn’t for me, it’s for my country.

“Bermuda is one of the best countries in the world to have been born and brought up in, and I’m really thankful for that opportunity.”

Premier Burt added: “It’s a very emotional film – it stirs up a lot of emotions.

“Full credit needs to go to those behind it because it’s a labour of love.

“It took a significant amount of time and effort. The Government of Bermuda was proud to support this effort.

“But it doesn’t happen without people wanting it to happen, willing it to happen, and doing the work.”
