Kim Burns Pickleball Tournament Continues
The third annual Kim Burns Memorial Pickleball Tournament continued at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium, featuring a full schedule of doubles and singles matches.
In the Men’s 3.5 Doubles Open Pool A, the duo of Don Trott and Damien McDonnell opened with an 11-6 victory over Owen Stewart and Christopher Hands. In the second round, Trott and McDonnell defeated Kent Delgado and Jael Ringgenberg 11-0. Delgado and Ringgenberg had previously won their opening match against Chris Smith and Malachi O’Leary 11-4.
Pool B matches showed varied results. Edgar Griffin and Sanjay Dhuria won their opening match 11-8 against Mark Hudson and Dan Stefan Vlad. Griffin and Dhuria then lost their second-round match to Theodosios Caimas and Harry Andrews by a score of 13-11. In the same pool, Israel Sanchez and Duane Simons defeated Paul Hayward and Ricky Spence 11-2.
In the Women’s 4.0 Open singles division, Lucy Yiasoumi secured two consecutive victories, defeating Naphisa Smith 15-7 and Ailish Byrne 15-9. Smith won her second-round match against Rachel Sawden 15-13.
Several tournament divisions concluded with medal presentations. The local pair of Donn Trott and Damien McDonnell went undefeated to win the gold medal in the Men’s 3.5 Open division, while Theodosios Caimassidis and Harry Andrews earned the silver medal. In the 50 plus 3.5 division, Tim McKittrick and Jan Brewer won gold, and Peter Illston and Tom Brown took silver.
In individual categories, Yiasoumi won the gold medal in the Women’s 4.0 Open singles. Fiona Donaldson won gold in the 3.5 Open Singles, and Emma Simmons took first place in the 50 plus 3.5 division.
In the Men’s 3.0 Open division, Virbert Virbert and Arthur Begeman secured the gold medal. Zach Sagers and Kevin Rhyno won the gold medal in the senior 3.0 division.
