Christine Dailey On Half-Marathon Derby
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Christine Dailey says she is approaching the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby with a relaxed mindset as she continues her return to running after giving birth to her daughter Jordan three months ago.
Dailey, 39, finished runner-up in the annual race in each of the past two years, clocking 1hr 28min 19sec last year after posting 1:26:56 in 2024.
The mother of three said she was pleased with her progress despite limited preparation heading to tomorrow’s [May 22] race.
“I’m looking to have fun,” Dailey told Bernews. “I’ve just got back into running, as I had a baby three months ago.
“It’s been exciting to get back out there. It’s quite soon and I’m happy to be running and feeling good.”
Dailey warmed up for the race by competing in the RenaissanceRe 10 Mile Challenge last month, where she finished as the fourth woman in 1:08:25.
“That was really raw,” she said. “I hadn’t run that distance in quite a long time.
“I was pretty cautious. Once I get this race done, I’ll move back into some good training.”
Dailey said she expects a competitive women’s field, with Maddie Durkin among the leading contenders following the departure of multiple champion Gayle Lindsay from the island.
“I’m probably not a contender,” Dailey said. “Maddie Durkin has been training hard and is a great athlete. She’ll be fast.
“I’ve no expectations and no pressure. I’ve been all over the map but never won the race – one day!”
Despite downplaying her chances, Dailey said she was looking forward to competing again.
“It’s such a fun day and I love running this race,” she added.
“Mentally, I’m just excited and privileged to be out there competing.
“It’s going to be a beautiful, hot day, so it should be a challenging day.”
