Ryan Outerbridge On Bermuda Day Race
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Ryan Outerbridge hopes to go one better and win his maiden Bermuda Day Half-Marathon Derby title after finishing runner-up in the past two races.
Outerbridge finished second to Sean Trott last year in 1hr 15min 40sec after placing behind Lamont Marshall in 2024 in 1:14:44.
“I’ve fallen just short the past two years coming second,” Outerbridge told Bernews.
“Obviously, I want to win it – I don’t want to settle for anything less.”
Among the contenders on Friday [May 22] are Trott, Marshall, Tyler Smith, Dennis Mbelenzi and Kallan Richardson.
“It’s going to be tough with Lamont and Sean, who have both won it,” Outerbridge said.
“Dennis is always in great shape, too.
“If I’m going to win it, I’m going to have to earn it by beating some good athletes.”
Outerbridge heads into the race after setting personal bests in the 1,500 and 5,000 metres at a meet in Azusa, California, last month.
The 24-year-old clocked 3:51.74 in the 1,500 and 14:38.89 in the 5,000.
“My coach [Zach Emerson] and I spoke after last year’s race. I’ve upped my mileage – I’ve done a block of six months of really high mileage,” said Outerbridge, who hopes to represent Bermuda at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in July and August.
“I lowered it when it was time to start racing.”
Outerbridge, who trains at his alma mater, Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire, said the half-marathon remained one of the highlights of his season.
“It’s one of the big events on my calendar and a great day for the whole community,” he added.
