Sean Trott says he is embracing the challenge of defending his Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby title for the first time.

The four-time runner-up broke through for his maiden victory in the 13.1-mile race from St George’s to Hamilton in 1hr 14min 31sec last year.

Heading into Friday’s race, Trott said capturing the crown had changed his mindset compared with previous years.

“It’s pressure, but a different type of pressure from what I previously experienced,” Trott told Bernews.

“Before, it was a case of, ‘I haven’t achieved this goal yet – can I do it?’

“Now it’s the pressure of being the defending champion. Am I the guy who can still pull this off?

“It feels more manageable.”

Trott said winning the title had helped him approach this year’s race with greater freedom.

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to defend the title,” he said. “I’m blessed to be healthy and hope to run as well as I can on the day.

“It was a big relief to win it. It’s freed me up a little mentally.

“I’ve been more consistent this year – speed work, longer runs.”

Among the challengers are multiple champion Lamont Marshall, Tyler Smith, Dennis Mbelenzi, Ryan Outerbridge and Kallan Richardson.

“It will be a full field,” Trott said.

“Tyler Smith has stated his intentions to go for it, then there’s Ryan Outerbridge, Dennis Mbelenzi, Lamont Marshall and Kallan Richardson, who has beaten me a few times this year.”

Since winning the title, Trott said he has received strong support from the public and several speaking opportunities.

“I’ve received a lot of positivity on the streets,” he said.

“A lot of opportunities have come from this, speaking to churches, schools, podcasts and radio stations. I’ve enjoyed it all.”

Trott, who has represented Bermuda at several International Island Games, said execution on race day will be crucial.

“There’s a huge mental aspect to the race, regardless of what you’ve done during the build-up,” he added.

“I hope I execute even better this year and hope everyone else has their best days too.”
