The Bermuda Tourism Authority is welcoming sailors and spectators alike as the historic 54th Newport Bermuda Race gets underway, celebrating 100 years of partnership between the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

A spokesperson said, “As the maritime world turns its focus to Newport, Rhode Island, the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] is proud to join the global sailing community in anticipation of the 54th Newport Bermuda Race. This iconic, 636-mile blue-water passage, set to commence on Friday, June 19, 2026, marks more than just a biennial race—it is a celebration of 100 years of historic collaboration between the Cruising Club of America [CCA] and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club [RBYC].

“Widely known as the “Thrash to the Onion Patch,” this grueling race is revered as one of the world’s oldest ocean races and most challenging offshore tests. It is a true rite of passage that demands unwavering skill, strategy, and resilience as sailors navigate the formidable Gulf Stream and thousands of miles of open Atlantic Ocean.”

“For many, just completing this race from Newport to Bermuda is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement,” said Michael DeCouto, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for the Bermuda Tourism Authority. “When you see the fleet emerging from the Atlantic to greet the St. David’s Lighthouse, it is a moment of profound transformation. The exhaustion of the ‘thrash’ is instantly replaced by the exhilaration of having conquered one of the most storied courses in sailing. Bermuda is ready to welcome these sailors with our legendary hospitality, turning the finish line into a multi-day celebration of grit, camaraderie, and island culture.”
