BMA Warns Of Fraudulent Payment Demand
The Bermuda Monetary Authority [BMA] warned regulated entities about a fraudulent email demanding a payment for alleged regulatory breaches.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Monetary Authority [Authority or BMA] has been made aware of an email sent to a regulated entity purporting to be from the Authority and demanding payment for breaching a number of regulations. The fraudulent demand specified that a payment of US $50,000.00 for the administrative fine be made in USDC to a digital wallet.
“The Authority wishes to remind regulated entities that payment information is published within the Annual Fees document, which can be found on the Authority’s website.
“Any instruction to deliver funds to any other account or institution should be considered fraudulent.
“The Authority also reminds the public that emails from the BMA will always appear with the email domain ‘@bma.bm’ and that recipients should verify the email address before responding to or acting on any content within the email.
“If you have any doubts about any communication received from the Authority, do not open any attachments and do not trust the contact information in the suspicious email. Instead, please call your representative at a number you already know, or call the Authority at our main number [441] 295-5278 and ask to be transferred to the sender so you can verbally confirm the content. If you have any queries regarding payments to the Authority, please e-mail finance-receivables@bma.bm.
“The Authority maintains a warning list to inform the public. The web domain of this fraudulent email has been added to the warning list of unauthorised entities, which can be found at http://www.bma.bm/warning-list.”
