Column: Senator Simmons On Families & More

When we talk about strengthening Bermuda’s economy, we often focus on jobs, investment, and economic growth. Yet one of the smartest investments we can make begins much earlier—in our children’s earliest years and in the families who are raising them.
The Government’s Child Day Care Allowance Amendment Regulations 2026 deserve strong support because they address a reality that many working parents face every day. Child care is no longer simply another household expense; for many families, it is one of their largest monthly bills. With the cost of rents, groceries, utilities, and transportation, paying more than $1,400 a month for a single child in day care places enormous strain on household finances. For parents with two or more young children, those costs can become overwhelming and prohibitive.
The amendments provide meaningful relief by increasing financial assistance for second and subsequent children while maintaining an income-based system that ensures support is directed where it is needed most. This is a balanced approach that combines compassion with fiscal responsibility.
Affordable child care is about far more than helping parents pay bills. It enables mothers and fathers to remain in the workforce, pursue career opportunities, and contribute to Bermuda’s economy. Employers also benefit when experienced workers are able to stay in their jobs instead of leaving because child care has become unaffordable.
Equally important are the benefits for children themselves. Quality early childhood education helps young minds develop confidence, communication skills, and healthy social relationships that form the foundation for future learning. Investing in those early years is one of the most effective ways to improve long-term educational and social outcomes.
Some may view these amendments simply as another government programme. They should instead be seen as an investment in Bermuda’s future. Strong families build strong communities, and children who receive quality early education are more likely to become productive, engaged citizens.
The Child Day Care Allowance Amendment Regulations 2026 acknowledge the financial pressures facing modern families and offer practical assistance where it is needed most. At a time when many households are struggling with the cost of living, this policy sends an important message; supporting families is not just good social policy—it is smart economic policy. Bermuda’s future depends on the success of its families, and helping them today benefits us all tomorrow.
