Tiara DeRosa Chasing National Record
Discus thrower Tiara DeRosa hopes to break her national record when she competes at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow today [July 30].
The 28-year-old warmed up for the Games by breaking her previous national record after finishing third at the Throw Town Ramona meeting, part of the Oklahoma Throws Series, with a throw of 51.10 metres.
Her previous best was 50.07m.
“It felt great to set a new record,” DeRosa told Bernews.
“I was able to throw another 50-metre mark before I arrived [in Glasgow], and I hope to do it again.”
DeRosa is competing at her second Commonwealth Games after making her debut in Birmingham in 2022.
She placed eleventh with a best throw of 45.79m in Birmingham, becoming the first Bermudian woman to compete in the discus at the Games.
“It’s a very special moment for me,” said DeRosa, who has been joined in Glasgow by her new coach, Jared Tyler, from Momentum Throws in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.
“It’s always a pleasure to wear the pink and blue, and I’m happy to do it again.”
She joins a team of seven track and field athletes in Glasgow — Jah-Nhai Perinchief, Norre Robinson, Nirobi Smith-Mills, Caitlyn Bobb, Sakari Famous and Jessica Lewis.
“I’ve travelled with these athletes since I was 15,” DeRosa added.
“We’ve competed together at the Carifta Games, the CAC Games and the Commonwealth Games, so we have a tight bond.”
