Bermuda triple jumper Jah-Nhai Perinchief is aiming to build on his breakthrough bronze medal at the previous Commonwealth Games when he competes in Glasgow this summer.
Perinchief placed third at the 2022 Games in Birmingham with a leap of 16.92 metres, announcing himself on the international stage in his maiden season as a professional.
The Olympian said he believes he can achieve more, despite expecting stronger competition when the Games are held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
“I shocked myself in Birmingham,” Perinchief told Bernews.
“I had a number of injuries and didn’t expect to do as well as I did.
“I just gave it my all and the outcome was good. I still feel I left something on the table and want to go for it again this year.
“I expect stronger competition, with Jamaica’s Jordan Scott jumping well.
“You have to adapt, and I think I’ll be ready and capable. The Commonwealth Games are my main focus this season.”
The 28-year-old has made a coaching change, teaming up with his long-time mentor Brian Wellman at the University of Kansas, where he serves as the jumps coach.
Bermudian Wellman finished fifth in the triple jump at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and sixth at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
“I decided to make a change — I still have a great relationship with my old coach [Travis Geopfert],” said Perinchief, who missed the indoor season because of injury.
“I got a bit stagnant and needed a bit of a change.
“Everything is tailored for me now and, if we need to adjust things on the fly because of injuries, we can navigate through them.
“I see Brian every day and we communicate a lot.”
