Column: Stroke Survivors Inspire At Age Concern

Yesterday, the Bermuda Stroke Association was honoured to be part of an educational event at Age Concern. Age Concern Bermuda is an independent non-profit [https://ageconcern.bm/] that serves over 6,000 older adults to enhance the quality of life and promote the rights and opportunities of older adults in Bermuda. Under the direction of Dr Edonna Bean [Community Engagement & Programmes Manager], it hosts monthly educational events. This month’s session was a stroke awareness event that brought together survivors, caregivers, and community members for an afternoon of learning, inspiration, and heartfelt connection.
The program opened with powerful survivor stories from Nicole Chichon DeSilva, Malika Watson, Clay Smith, and Oscar Lightbourne that highlighted the journey of rehabilitation after a stroke. Attendees heard firsthand how determination, support, and education play a vital role in recovery. In addition to sharing the warning signs of stroke, speakers emphasised the importance of exercise, staying motivated during the healing process, and the challenges and triumphs of returning to work after a stroke.
A special moment was reserved for a caregiver’s perspective. The caregiver Mark Berry shared practical advice on how to ask for help and offered strategies for managing the demands of caregiving without succumbing to burnout. Their honest account resonated deeply with many in the audience, sparking important conversations about self-care and community support.
We were encouraged by the audience’s engagement, with many thoughtful questions and a keen interest in learning more. This kind of participation is vital to building a supportive network for those affected by stroke and to fostering community partnership in Bermuda.
