Column: Dr Watkins On Stroke Prevention
[Column written by Dr Kimberley Watkins]
World Stroke Day was observed at Par-la-Ville Queen Elizabeth Park on Friday, October 30th. The event aimed to reinforce stroke awareness and prevention in the community.
Representatives from Evolution Healing Centre, Jill Davidson of The Function Junction, and Island Nutrition were present at the event, supporting the cause and engaging with attendees.
Organizers reminded everyone that rapid response is critical: when it comes to stroke, every minute counts. The event served as an important reminder of the BE FAST signs for recognizing stroke:
- B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination, headaches, and dizziness
- E – Eyes: Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- F – Face: Facial drooping or uneven smile
- A – Arms: Arm weakness or numbness
- S – Speech: Slurred or confused speech
- T – Time: Time to call emergency services immediately. Note the time the symptoms started. Minutes save lives.
Attendees left better equipped to recognise the warning signs and act quickly in an emergency related to stroke.
