Johnstone Showcases Bermuda Cuisine In U.S.
Bermudian chef Trevor Johnstone, founder of the award-winning Plant Based Fuel BDA, travelled to Shreveport, Louisiana, where he served as the featured guest chef at The Atlantic Table, a one-night culinary collaboration held at Abby Singer’s Bistro.
Hosted by acclaimed Chef Niema DiGrazia, the dinner brought together two chefs whose culinary backgrounds reflect the rich traditions of West Africa, Bermuda, the Caribbean and the American South.
Guests experienced a thoughtfully curated multi-course menu that celebrated shared history through elevated plant-based cuisine and live music. The event marked a significant milestone in Johnstone’s career as his first international culinary collaboration outside Bermuda. It provided an opportunity to introduce Bermuda’s vibrant culinary culture and Plant Based Fuel BDA’s innovative approach to plant-based cuisine to a new audience in Louisiana.
The collaboration began through Ben Whalen, a longtime friend of Johnstone, whose introduction to Chef DiGrazia helped bring The Atlantic Table to life. In the lead-up to the event, the collaboration was also featured on Shreveport’s local television station, KTAL 6 News, where Johnstone joined Chef Niema DiGrazia and Ben Whalen for a live interview to discuss the inspiration behind the dinner and the cultural connections celebrated through the event.
A spokesperson said, “Johnstone’s culinary journey spans more than two decades, including training at Bermuda College and Johnson & Wales University, professional kitchens in Bermuda, Miami, Florida, and Barcelona, Spain, as well as advanced studies in Plant-Based Nutrition through eCornell. Today, Plant Based Fuel BDA is recognized for its elevated dining experiences and was honoured with the 2025 Best of Bermuda Award for Catering.”
Reflecting on the experience, Mr Johnstone said, “Representing Bermuda at The Atlantic Table was an incredible honour. Sharing our island’s flavours and demonstrating how exciting and refined plant-based cuisine can be on an international stage is something I will always be proud of. I’m grateful to Chef Niema DiGrazia, Ben Whalen, and everyone who made this unforgettable evening possible.”
The spokesperson said, “The Atlantic Table not only celebrated the culinary traditions that connect communities across the Atlantic but also established new relationships and opportunities for future collaborations, further showcasing Bermudian culinary talent on the international stage.”
