Video: Daley Siblings Looking Forward To Games
Bermuda siblings Elan and Elijah Daley are relishing the opportunity to compete together on one of the biggest stages of their careers at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The pair will represent the island at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, starting today [July 24].
Elan will compete in the women’s 100 metres freestyle and the 50 and 100 butterfly, while Elijah contests the men’s 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley at the Games.
For Elijah, 20, who studies at the University of Toronto, the Games come after breaking a long-standing Bermuda record in the 200 individual medley to secure his place in Glasgow.
His time of 2min 6.68sec beat the previous national mark of 2:07.25, set by Stephen Fahy at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg and equalled by team-mate Sam Williamson in Edinburgh last year.
“It’s great to be experiencing such a high level of competition with my sister,” Elijah told Bernews.
“She’s one of the biggest supporters in my life, and I try to support her as well. It’s great to have each other here in Glasgow.
“Bermuda is home and it makes me proud to be representing the island and my family.
“I hope to do my best. It’s a great stage with some of the best athletes in the world. Being able to learn from the best guys will help push me to the next level of competition.”
Elan, 21, a University of Tennessee student, said sharing the experience with her brother will make the occasion even more memorable.
“I haven’t been to a big meet like this,” she said. “To be able to experience it with my younger brother is really exciting.
“It’s something else. I can’t describe it. He settles me, hypes me up, and it’s really beneficial for us to be competing together in Glasgow.
“When we touched down here, we were both like, ‘Hey, this is really cool and exciting.’
“All anyone can ask for is for us to do our best. Watching the other athletes in person will progress us in so many ways.”
The Daleys are one of two sibling pairings representing Bermuda in the swimming competition, alongside Emma and Jack Harvey.
