A nearly century-old Bermuda tourist guide featuring black-and-white photographs and period advertisements is being offered through an online auction ending on Sunday, August 30.

The LiveAuctioneers listing features a second edition of Rider’s Bermuda: The Standard Guide Book for Travelers, published in 1928.

The book was compiled under the general editorship of Fremont Rider by Frederic Taber Cooper and published by the Macmillan Company in New York and George Allen & Unwin in London.

The guide provided visitors with information about Bermuda as it appeared during the late 1920s, with photographs depicting the island and advertisements offering a glimpse of the businesses and services marketed to travellers at the time.

In the preface to the second edition, the editor wrote, “Even in Bermuda change does come,” explaining that the updated guide recorded changes on the island while introducing new typography, formatting and binding.

The auction listing describes the book as “a well-travelled paperback as it was meant to be.” Its condition includes fading to the front cover, scuffs, tears and pages toned with age, although the pages are otherwise described as clean.
