Results: Devil’s Isle Fight Championship
Bermudian and overseas fighters competed across several combat sports disciplines at the inaugural Devil’s Isle Fight Championship at North Field, National Sports Centre, at the weekend.
DIFC 001 featured bouts across mixed martial arts, kickboxing, Muay Thai and grappling and was sanctioned by the Bermuda Combat Sports Commission.
The event, promoted by Na’twuan Fisher, marked the first time cage fighting has been staged on the island, with the bouts taking place inside a hexagonal cage.
Ishaan Rangta, of Open Mat Bermuda, defeated Tristan Burgess, of Aries Sports Centre, in a 145-pound mixed martial arts bout.
Chris Regan, the Open Mat head coach, said: “Proud doesn’t begin to describe it. To walk into our academy at barely 18 years of age and earn the respect of a group of people who only value hard work, maximum effort and a decent sense of humour, is no easy task.
“And yet, here he is [Ishaan] – Bermuda’s first fully sanctioned MMA event … winner.”
Jibreel “Anszar” Talbot, of Fight City Muay Thai, defeated Jashun Thomas, of Open Mat Bermuda, at 165 pounds in kickboxing.
Elvis Garcia, of Burnsville Martial Arts Academy of Minnesota, defeated Lucas Morello, of Slay Fly Muay Thai of Philadelphia, at 130 pounds in Muay Thai.
Jay Astwood, of Fight City Muay Thai, defeated Cole Durham, of Aries Sports Centre, at 165 pounds in kickboxing.
Che Durham, of Aries Sports Centre, defeated Matisse Bascome, of Open Mat Bermuda, in a 180-pound catchweight contest.
Haelyn Marquez, of P4P MMA in Toronto, defeated Enzi Johnston, of Aries Sports Centre, at 115 pounds in a kickboxing contest.
Preston Rust, of Burnsville Martial Arts Academy, defeated Jamali Bridgewater, of Open Mat Bermuda, at 195 pounds in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Mac Kukowski, of Burnsville Martial Arts Academy, defeated Ryan Hopkins, of Open Mat Bermuda, at 190 pounds in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Garon Wilkinson, an Aries Sports Centre coach and the Bermuda Sanshou Association president, said: “To think that 20 years ago, full contact martial arts was relatively unheard of in Bermuda, and to see the level and diversity of fighters we have now is incredible!
“Thank you, Na’twuan, Fisher for promoting such an amazing event through Devil’s Isle Fighting Championship. We got something special here. Well done!”
