BPS Issues Reminder On Alcohol And Minors
The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] reminded the public, as well as operators and staff of liquor-licenced premises, of “their responsibilities regarding alcohol and minors.”
A police spokesperson said, “This advisory follows recent reports received by the BPS involving alcohol consumption by minors at a liquor-licenced establishment. Inquiries are ongoing.
“Under section 1 of the Liquor Licence Act 1974, a minor is a person under 18 years of age.
“Under section 40, it is an offence for a licensed person to sell or serve alcohol to, or for consumption by, a minor, or to allow a minor to consume alcohol on licenced premises.
“The law also applies to members of the public. Under section 42, any person on licenced premises who obtains alcohol for a minor, or assists a minor in obtaining or consuming alcohol, commits an offence.
“Under section 17A, licence holders, their employees and agents must check the photographic identification of anyone who appears to be a minor before selling or supplying alcohol.
“Acceptable identification includes a valid driver’s licence, passport, or other valid government-issued identification.
“Where appropriate identification cannot be produced, the sale or supply of alcohol must be refused.
“The BPS encourages liquor-licenced establishments to ensure staff are familiar with these requirements and reminds members of the public not to provide or facilitate access to alcohol by minors.
“BPS officers will continue to conduct liquor licence checks and investigate suspected breaches.
“Where offences are identified, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law.”
