BZS & BAMZ On Reported Manatee Sighting
[Updated with video] The Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] and the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo [BAMZ] said they are “aware of a video circulating showing what appears to be a manatee in Bermuda waters.”
A spokesperson said, “Our wildlife team is currently working to verify the sighting and is coordinating with relevant marine mammal experts to determine the best path forward for the animal’s welfare if the sighting is confirmed.
“If you see the animal, please help by:
- Reporting the sighting immediately, including the specific location, so our team can locate and monitor the animal and help protect it from marine traffic.
- Keeping a safe and respectful distance. Do not attempt to touch, feed or otherwise interact with the animal.
- Staying calm and moving slowly and predictably nearby — manatees are slow-moving, air-breathing mammals and need space to surface undisturbed.
- Alerting nearby boaters to slow down and watch for the animal in the area.
