Photos & Video: Youth Cultural Connect Event
[Updated] The Department of Culture hosted a special youth edition of its annual Cultural Connect event on Saturday, August 22 at Pig’s Field, Band Room Lane, Pembroke, bringing young people, families and community groups together for an afternoon celebrating Bermuda’s culture.
Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport Owen Darrell previously said, “Culture lives and grows through our young people, and this year’s Cultural Connect is about giving them a meaningful space to engage, participate and help shape Bermuda’s cultural future. We also want to bring generations together, because culture is strongest when we share it, celebrate it and pass it on.”
Update August 24, 3.40pm: A Government spokesperson said, “The Department of Culture’s annual Cultural Connect brought music, Gombeys, activities and plenty of energy to Pig’s Field on August 22, drawing an intergenerational crowd for a special youth edition of the event.”
Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport Owen Darrell said, “Culture isn’t only what we inherit or what we pass along. It is also what we do, what we create and how we come together. That was on full display at Cultural Connect. Our young people weren’t just watching from the sidelines. They were dancing, creating, participating and enjoying Bermuda’s culture in their own way, alongside their families and the wider community.”
The spokesperson said, “The afternoon featured performances by Aalai and Fire Wayne, building to a powerful closing performance by H&H Gombeys. Mr Fotogenik hosted the event, with music throughout the afternoon from DJ Mico.
“Families also enjoyed refreshments, crafts, a fun castle and interactive activities led by the Office of Youth Affairs, the Bermuda National Library, The Chewstick Foundation, and other community groups.
“Cultural Connect is the Department of Culture’s annual stakeholder engagement event, bringing together the people and organisations that contribute to cultural life in Bermuda. This year, the focus was firmly on young people, with an afternoon that gave them room to participate, create, and enjoy themselves.”
