Truck Overturns After Collision In Sandys

[Updated] A collision involving a car and a propane gas truck occurred on Somerset Road this morning [Aug 20] resulting in the propane gas truck overturning onto its side.

A police spokesperson said, “Shortly before 5:30 am on Thursday, 20th August 2026, police and other first responders were dispatched to a report of a road traffic collision involving a motorcar and a propane gas truck on Somerset Road, just west of Beacon Hill.

“Initial information suggests that the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when they collided on the bend near the Mangrove Bay Post Office, resulting in the propane gas truck overturning onto its side.

“Neither driver, both of whom are male, was reported to be injured.

“The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service has carried out an assessment of the gas truck as a precaution.

“The roadway is currently completely blocked and traffic diversions are in effect at Beacon Hill Road and Mangrove Bay Road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes until the collision scene has been cleared.”

Update 12.20pm: A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service thanks the public for their patience and can now confirm that the section of Somerset Road, near Mangrove Bay Post Office, has been re-opened to normal traffic flow.

“The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service has put sand on the road surface, but it is still slick and road users are advised to slow down and use caution when travelling through the area.”

Update 4.00pm: A Bermuda Gas & Utility Company Limited spokesperson said, “This morning, a third-party vehicle collided with a Bermuda Gas truck in the Mangrove Bay area, causing temporary traffic delays. We are incredibly grateful to report that no injuries were sustained by anyone involved.

“We would like to thank all emergency personnel and members of the public who assisted at the scene of this accident.

“We also want to thank the public for their patience and understanding while emergency responders worked to safely manage the scene and restore normal traffic flow.

“Bermuda Gas is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities as they investigate the accident. The safety of our employees and the public remain our highest priority, and we are deeply relieved that no one was injured.

“We wish to inform you that this incident will not cause any service disruptions. All scheduled deliveries will continue as expected.”

    It would take a combination of many things going wrong for a propane tank to explode. A simple rollover won’t do it.
