Community Village Marks Start Of School Year

More than a dozen community representatives gathered at City Hall to celebrate the new school year, promote the theme of “Always Learning,” and highlight initiatives supporting students, teachers and the wider community.

A spokesperson said, “More than a dozen representatives from the Village gathered at the foyer of City Hall on Wednesday to Celebrate the New School Year. Glenn Fubler encouraged the group to acquaint themselves with each other, making the point that We are here to foster that sense of community which nurtures the potential of the entire Island.

“Dr Carika Weldon pointed out: All of us have something to learn and interacting with that sense of humility fostering community. I always get something from those young people I engage with, regardless of their age.

“Text: Motivated by the African wisdom…It takes a Village … Island stakeholders are collaborating in Celebrating the New School Year. Our theme Always Learning calls us to foster authentic community as student/teachers. It also speaks to the potential for human transformation.

“In appreciation of those in our community who are currently ‘Walking the Talk’, doing their part for the Village; we are offering a ‘shout out’; saluting exemplary NGOs:

• “Bermuda Is Love”– which runs a free Breakfast Program – 3 days/week at Elliott Primary – 1 day/week @ Harrington Sound. Additionally BiL facilitate after-school clubs at Berkeley Institute, Paget Primary & Elliott.

• “Support Public Schools Bermuda” – which accesses donated free vital supplies for the use of teachers on a regular basis. They supplied some $700,000 – from donations from the business sector and the general public – worth of supplies to Public School teachers over 8 years.

“In conclusion; we are inviting community stakeholders to join the Village Networking Collective. We will leverage the 1980s Homework Hotline which assisted students and their families. Village Networking is aiming for a Homework Hotline 2.0. with the goal of launching a pilot in early October 2026.

“Proclamation for the Occassion: Attached is a Joint Proclamation on “Always Learning” supported by diverse personalities across the community: Including: Dennis Lister, Joan Dillas Wright, Dr David Sam, Dr Carika Weldon, Ellen Kate Horton, Dale Butler, Wendell Hollis, Rev. Terry Hassell, Dr Leonard Santucci, Keisha Douglas, Dave Horan, Saleem Talbot, Dr Janet Kemp, Dr George Cook … amongst others.

• “St Marks Church has a new partnership supportive partnership with Harrington Sound Primary
• “Mr & Mrs Victor Fishington volunteer/maintain the Library @ Paget Primary
• “Warwick Workman’s Club stages a ‘Give Away’ for students every September
• “Wolves F.C.: Stages an annual lunch for all of Elliott Primary students.
• “XRoads F.C. is collaborating in staging the Peace Games in October, to foster harmony across the Island, especially for young people.”
