Hassell Selected As Black Futures Awards Finalist
Gherdai Hassell has been named an Arts & Culture Award finalist at the Black Futures Awards 2026 in the UK, with organisers highlighting the Bermudian artist’s international achievements and work supporting others through the arts.
The awards will take place on October 2 during the UK’s Black History Month, with the organisation saying the awards “spotlight community impact, leadership, creativity, and enterprise within the Black community.”
In its announcement, the organisation said, “We are delighted to announce Gherdai Hassell as a finalist for the Arts & Culture Award at the Black Futures Awards 2026. Gherdai is an internationally recognised visual artist whose work explores identity, memory, race and cultural belonging.
“Her achievements include international exhibitions, major arts awards and a British Council fellowship connected to the Venice Biennale. Alongside her artistic practice, she has delivered workshops for refugee families with Manchester Art Gallery and continues to mentor and support others through the arts. Please join us in congratulating Gherdai on this well-deserved recognition.”
Hassell’s selection follows other recognition of her work, including a Venice Biennale fellowship announced earlier this year and the Castlefield Gallery: Artist Professional Development Award, which she received at the 2022 Manchester Open Awards.
