Bermudian photographer Nicola Muirhead’s work is being exhibited at the Jakarta International Photo Festival, which opened on September 11 and continues through September 20, 2026, at Taman Ismail Marzuki in Central Jakarta, Indonesia.

The festival’s description says, “Descendants of Summer by Nicola Muirhead. Rooted in Bermuda’s colonial history, this project explores how identity, memory, and the legacy of colonialism continue to shape contemporary life. Through a combination of portraiture, landscape, archival materials, and oral histories developed in collaboration with the local community, the work reflects on resilience as an act of preserving memory, reclaiming marginalized narratives, and rebuilding a sense of belonging in the aftermath of colonialism.

“This project demonstrates that remembrance is itself a form of resilience, particularly when communities reclaim the authority to tell their own histories. Nicola Muirhead is a Bermudian documentary photographer whose research-driven, collaborative work explores how history shapes the present. Her award-winning projects center on community voices.”

The Jakarta International Photo Festival curatorial team, consisting of Chelsea Chua [Singapore] and Yoppy Pieter [Indonesia], selected 22 photography and multimedia projects from 17 countries to be presented at the festival’s Photo Exhibition.

The selected projects came from an open call, which ran from 6 April to 11 May 2026, as well as from curators’ invitation. The final selection was made from 408 submissions representing artists from 58 countries.

This year’s festival carries the theme “Resilience”, bringing together work examining endurance, survival, restoration and regeneration.
