Sarai Hines Leads Mural Project In Birmingham
Bermudian artist Sarai Hines recently partnered with St Basils — a UK charity dedicated to supporting young people — to lead an inspiring community mural project titled ‘Our Future, Our City’ at their Birmingham Live & Work project.
The St Basils Charity said, “St Basils are lost for words at how wonderful this creative project has been and we are deeply grateful to artist and educator Sarai Hines for leading this effort in collaboration with our young people.”
Ms. Hines said, “This mural project has been a success in so many ways! The first step was the ‘Design Workshop’. A night at Birmingham Live & Work with the wonderful young people who were interested in being a part of the process.
“This workshop entailed understanding what a mural is, what challenges we have to prepare for and the thought process in choosing a design for their mural.
“Being able to come to a mutual decision around what they wanted the mural to be about, the imagery and message they wanted to express was an evening of meaningful conversations. The drawings in the end became the brilliant start to the final design being put all together digitally.
“The next step was all about getting the design finalized by myself and getting it drawn onto the wall. Preparation at this point is important by making sure everything is ready for the big painting day. I want to thank the fantastic support from the St. Basils team to get everything ready.
“The final step was the ‘Painting Day’. Ultimately my favorite part, having everyone come together and share in one experience! Tips and tricks were taught in the day around how to paint and what to look out for when painting the mural.
“It was inspiring to see their confidence grow by the hour. The biggest reason for this being my favorite part was seeing the community grow – friendships blossomed and the encouragement we all had for each other was heartwarming.
“I love supporting youth and seeing wonderful people doing the same. I want to say a big thank you to Alex Keane and the young people for making this a truly unforgettable project from start to finish.”
St Basils Charity added, “Thank you to Catherine from Richborough & RE Martin Ltd for donating twelve 5 litre paint tubs, brushes & overalls to the project. Biggest congratulations to Sarai and the young people, the final piece is beyond stunning!”
