The Salvation Army celebrated 130 years of service to Bermuda at a special event at City Hall, where Mayor Dr. Michael Branco reflected on the organisation’s longstanding contributions to the community and its enduring relationship with the City of Hamilton.

A spokesperson said, “Earlier today, The Salvation Army marked an extraordinary milestone with a special event on the steps of City Hall celebrating 130 years of service to the people of Bermuda.

“Mayor Dr. Michael Branco delivered the welcome address, reflecting on The Salvation Army’s remarkable legacy of service and the longstanding relationship it shares with the City of Hamilton. Since arriving in Bermuda in 1896, The Salvation Army has been a constant presence in our community, providing not simply assistance, but dignity, compassion and hope to people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.”

During his remarks, Mayor Branco reflected on the organisation’s remarkable legacy of service and the longstanding relationship it shares with the City of Hamilton: “For 130 years, generations of Salvation Army officers, volunteers, supporters and members have quietly gone about the work of caring for our community,” Mayor Branco said. “Today, that work can be seen through food banks and feeding programmes, emergency and transitional housing, addiction recovery services, street outreach, disaster response and support for individuals and families experiencing hardship.

“The City of Hamilton is also very proud of the relationship we have shared with The Salvation Army over the years. One of our own cherished traditions takes place right here at City Hall each Christmas, when the Mayor officially helps launch the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign.

“So today, we celebrate not only 130 years of history, but 130 years of meals served, doors opened, hands extended, lives changed and hope restored…Thank you, Salvation Army, for your unwavering service to Bermuda. May the next chapter of your service be every bit as meaningful as the 130 years that have brought us here today.”

A spokesperson added, “Former City Mayor Charles Gosling was also in attendance for the celebration.”
