The Bermuda Karate Federation will host the Paul Lepercq Memorial Traditional Martial Arts Tournament on Sunday [September 27] at the Whitney Institute Auditorium, bringing karate athletes together for a full day of Kata, Kumite and Kobudo competition.

A spokesperson said, “Bermuda’s karate community will come together this Sunday, September 27, for the Paul Lepercq Memorial Traditional Martial Arts Tournament at the Whitney Institute Auditorium.

“The tournament will bring athletes from across Bermuda onto the competition floor for a full day of Kata, Kumite and Kobudo.

“The event honors the legacy of Paul Lepercq while giving today’s karate athletes an opportunity to compete, develop their skills and represent their dojos.

“Organizers are encouraging families, former karate practitioners, martial arts supporters and members of the public to attend.”

“This event is about keeping competition and traditional karate active in Bermuda,” said Edmond Johnson, General Secretary of the Bermuda Karate Federation. “Our athletes put many hours into their training. Having people in the stands supporting them adds something important to the experience. We want the wider community to come out, watch good karate and support these athletes.”

A spokesperson added, “Competitors will range from developing students to experienced advanced athletes, giving spectators an opportunity to see different stages of karate development.

“Kata will test technical execution, balance, timing, speed, power and control.

“Kumite will bring athletes together in head-to-head competition under WKF rules, testing distance, timing, tactics and control.

“Kobudo will showcase traditional weapons competition and another important aspect of martial arts training.

“The tournament comes after an earlier date was rescheduled due to low registration numbers. The new September date gives the karate community another opportunity to come together and support local competition.”

Johnson said the continued success of events such as the Lepercq Memorial depends on support from across Bermuda’s dojos. “When one dojo holds an event, we want the wider karate community to support it. Strong local tournaments give our athletes more opportunities to compete without having to travel overseas. They also give younger athletes something to work toward and help us maintain an active competition pathway in Bermuda.”

“The message behind this year’s tournament is simple: Honoring the past. Supporting today. Building tomorrow.

“The Paul Lepercq Memorial Traditional Martial Arts Tournament takes place Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the Whitney Institute Auditorium.

“Members of the public are encouraged to attend and support Bermuda’s karate athletes.”
