Bermuda’s sailors have reflected on their performance at the inaugural New York Yacht Club Women’s International Championship in Newport, Rhode Island.

Skipper Katrina Williams led Bermuda to seventeenth place in the 20-boat fleet, with their best finish of ninth coming in the fifth, sixth and seventh races of the ten-race series sailed in the IC37 keelboat.

Co-skipper Julia Lines was joined by Ellie Cumpsty, Carola Cooper, Kate O’Donnell, Meg Sherwin, Brandi Kastner, Ellie Wollmann, Bella Cassaretto and Leah Sweet in Bermuda’s team.

Team Vigilant, of USA, won the inaugural regatta that was held from September 12 to 19.

“We went into the event knowing we had a lot to learn, but the level of competition was even steeper than we expected,” read a Bermuda women sailing social media post.

“20 teams from 14 countries, with some seriously good sailors out there. Getting to race against some of the world’s best female sailors was pretty amazing!

“We learned loads throughout the week – about the IC37, about racing together, and about how to keep things moving when things didn’t quite go to plan.

“There were some great moments, some tougher ones, plenty of laughs and a lot of time spent trying to work out how to make the boat as fast as possible!

“A huge thank you to our coaches, Mike Marshall and Marty Kullman, for all their help, patience and knowledge throughout the campaign.

“And to everyone who donated, shared our posts, sent messages, followed along and cheered us on – we genuinely felt the support and couldn’t have done it without you.”
