Tejah Bean Earns Bachelor’s Degree At 19

Tejah Bean has earned a first-class bachelor’s degree in computer science from Lancaster University after studying through UA92, a higher-education institution in Manchester, at the age of 19.

Ms Bean credited her family, teachers and scholarship support for helping her achieve the degree.

She attended West End Primary, Sandys Secondary Middle School and The Berkeley Institute.

“I graduated early from Berkeley and came over to the UK, where I did an accelerated degree,” Ms Bean told Bernews.

Ms Bean and her twin sister, Tange, were raised by their mother, Talibah Branch, with Tange now pursuing her own path in medicine at Edge Hill University in Lancashire.

“My teachers at Berkeley supported me the whole way and pushed me to graduate early and reach my full potential and that made a real difference,” Ms Bean said.

Her interest in the field was sparked by the 2023 cyberattack on the Bermuda Government.

“Seeing how much it disrupted the island made me want to work in protecting it,” she said.

Ms Bean received scholarship support from Belco and AXA XL for her undergraduate studies and is now starting a master’s in international and security law at the University of Manchester, funded by the Ministry of Education and the Appleby Legal Education Scholarship.

She also plans to pursue a doctorate at the University of Oxford.

During her time at Lancaster University, Ms Bean founded the African and Caribbean Society, participated in the Women in Tech Society and coding club, and won the Fujitsu Rising Women in Tech award.

She has also worked in legal and compliance at Chubb and in cyber risk at the Bermuda Monetary Authority last summer.

Reflecting on her experience, Ms Bean said, “At the end of the day, this isn’t really about the achievements.

“It’s about my mother, my sister, and my teachers at Berkeley, and what’s possible when you have people like that behind you.”

She also said she hopes her story can inspire other youngsters on the island.

“I was in public education my whole life and when I went to university it was fully funded by scholarships and loans.

“I want to show young kids in Bermuda, it doesn’t matter what your circumstance, economically background, you can achieve your goals if you put your mind to it.”
