BDA Community Pharmacy is offering free 15-minute blood pressure screenings on October 23 to mark Pharmacy Week and encourage the community to prioritise heart health.

A spokesperson said, “Your heart works around the clock, so why not give it 15 minutes of your time? This upcoming Pharmacy Week, BDA Community Pharmacy is inviting the community to do just that, with free blood pressure screenings and an opportunity to get to know the friendly faces behind their local pharmacy on Friday, October 23rd.

“Celebrated from October 18th to 24th, Pharmacy Week shines a spotlight on the pharmacists who play an important role in keeping our communities healthy. To mark the occasion, BDA Community Pharmacy is offering free 15-minute blood pressure appointments from 9am to 1pm at its pharmacy on 22 Princess Street, Hamilton.

“High blood pressure is often described as a silent condition, as it typically develops without noticeable symptoms, leaving many people unaware that their readings are elevated. Left unmanaged, it can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. A simple blood pressure check takes just minutes but can provide valuable insight into your health, helping you identify potential concerns early and take action when needed.

“But there’s more to the invitation than checking those all-important numbers. It’s also a chance to meet the pharmacy team, ask those health questions you’ve been meaning to get around to and discover just how much healthcare support is available right on your doorstep.”

“We want people to know we’re more than somewhere they come to collect a prescription,” said Melissa Levy James, Head Pharmacist at BDA Community Pharmacy. “We’re a friendly team who genuinely enjoy getting to know the people we serve. Pharmacy Week is the perfect excuse to invite everyone in, have a chat and show them that we’re here for all sorts of health questions, big or small.”

A spokesperson added, “From medication advice and support with managing ongoing health conditions, to everyday questions about health and wellbeing, community pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals. And sometimes, something as simple as a blood pressure check can be the starting point for a much wider conversation about your health.

“BDA Community Pharmacy, operated by the Bermuda Diabetes Association, is open to the whole community, not just those living with diabetes. Located at 22 Princess Street, the pharmacy operates as a social enterprise, with proceeds directly supporting the Bermuda Diabetes Association. In 2025, the pharmacy filled nearly 1,400 prescriptions, valued at over $160,000, at no cost to diabetes patients who were uninsured or underinsured.”

“Sometimes people just need a little reassurance or someone they feel comfortable asking a question,” added Melissa Levy James. “That’s the kind of relationship we want to build with our community. So whether you’re already a familiar face or you’ve never stepped through our doors before, we’d love to welcome you in. And while you’re here, why not give your ticker a quick check?”

A spokesperson added, “The free blood pressure screenings will take place on Friday, October 23rd, from 9am to 1pm. Each appointment lasts 15 minutes and must be booked in advance.
