Lauren Cardwell & Toronto Win OUA Title
Bermudian Lauren Cardwell and her University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team won the Ontario University Athletics [OUA] championship after defeating the York Lions in a shootout at Alumni Field in Toronto on Sunday [Oct 25].
The Varsity Blues prevailed 3–2 in the shootout following a 1–1 draw in regulation, with the win securing the programme’s 35th OUA championship and its first since 2023.
Ava Airnes put Toronto ahead in the fourth quarter, but York’s Katie Tye equalised from a penalty corner on the final play of the game to force the shootout.
Danielle D’Silva and Vanessa Marques converted for Toronto as the teams remained level at 2–2 after four rounds.
Toronto goalkeeper Mary Yang then denied York’s Abby Thompson, before Kirsten D’Silva scored the decisive fifth-round attempt to secure the championship.
Yang was named player of the match after making four saves in regulation and three more during the shootout.
Toronto had advanced to the final with a 2–0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in the semi-final.
