A ribbon cutting was held to mark the official opening of the Department of Workforce Development’s new location at Bermuda College, with the Minister saying it represents more than the opening of a Government office, as it is an “opportunity to strengthen the connection between education, training, professional development and employment.”
Speaking at the official opening, Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward said, “It is my pleasure to welcome you to Lower West Hall at Bermuda College as we formally mark the opening of the Department of Workforce Development’s new location.
“Today represents more than the opening of a Government office. It represents an opportunity to strengthen the connection between education, training, professional development and employment.
“The Bermuda College is our only community college here on island. It provides academic, technical and professional education that prepares Bermudians for further study, recognized qualifications and meaningful careers.
“The Department of Workforce Development helps individuals identify their career pathways, develop their skills, access training and connect with employers. It also supports apprenticeships, national certification, scholarships and bursaries, youth employment and the delivery of Bermuda Job Connect.
“The mandates of these two organizations are distinct, but they are closely aligned. Bermuda College provides education and credentials. The Department helps connect that learning to apprenticeships, employment and continued career advancement.
“Locating the Department here at Bermuda College creates a natural opportunity to strengthen that education-to-employment pathway. Students will be closer to career guidance, employment planning and apprenticeship support.
“The Department will be better positioned to engage with College programmes and identify potential candidates. Employers will have a clearer route through which they can connect with trained and motivated Bermudians. Members of the public will also be able to access the Department’s services from its enhanced operational environment.
“The Department remains open to all members of our community, whether someone is unemployed, underemployed, seeking a career change, interested in an apprenticeship or looking to strengthen their professional skills, the Department is here to provide guidance and support. The partnership between the Department and Bermuda College has already begun to produce meaningful activity.
“I wish to recognize Acting Director Mrs. Sonya Clarke, the Department’s management team and every member of staff who contributed to this transition. I also extend sincere appreciation to the President of Bermuda College, Dr. Sams for his executive leadership and staff of Bermuda College for their cooperation and their willingness to explore a stronger working relationship with the Department of Workforce Development.
“I look forward to seeing this partnership continue to grow and deliver results for our students, our employers, our economy and our country. It is now my honor to formally mark the opening of the Department of Workforce Development at Lower West Hall, Bermuda College. Thank you.”
