BNV Audio: Interview With Minister Hayward
Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward outlined his plans for a social development strategy during a Bernews News & Views [BNV] podcast interview about his bid to lead the Progressive Labour Party [PLP].
Speaking with host Don Burgess, Minister Hayward also discussed his leadership approach, priorities for his first 100 days, support for young people and seniors, Bermuda’s economic development, and what he would do to unite the party after the leadership election.
“I’ll ensure that whatever we do is people-centered, that we empower persons as much as we possibly can,” he said. “A hallmark of Jason Hayward government would be the development of a full, robust social development strategy that provides social interventions from early childhood development right up to ensuring that our seniors age in dignity.”
“A number of the challenges that we see existing within our economy are not economic challenges, but they are permeating from our social economic environment, and our social development strategy will ensure that we address the root causes of a number of the challenges that we actually see.”
Listen to the full interview to hear what Minister Hayward had to say about how his leadership might differ from Premier David Burt’s, whether fellow candidate Curtis Dickinson could have a role in his Cabinet, and how he plans to unite the party, alongside his thoughts on his priorities for his first 100 days, supporting seniors and youth, and preventing a ‘brain drain’ with young Bermudians leaving the island.

Did the Minister of Economy explain how our reported rate of retail price inflation is lower than that of the U.S., the U.K. and Canada?
Did the Minister of Economy explain how our reported rate of retail price inflation is economically possible?
It is impossible, and the CPI needs to change to reflect the true cost to Bermudians. We are being starved of our wages as pay increased have not been meeting the true inflationary cost for a number of years.
Us Bermudians getting POORER each day under the PLP.
Bermuda Government using the Modified Laspeyers method is distorting the truth. (can cause inflation number to be lower)
