Cash Trash Bash Holds Cheque Presentation
Cash Trash Bash has raised $3,992.26 through its annual campaign to remove trash from Bermuda’s waters, with the proceeds being shared between two environmental organisations.
A group of 14 volunteers collected 2,028.5lb of trash during 48 hours of work throughout August, with participants ranging in age from four to 75.
A cheque for $1,996.13 was presented to the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences at a recent ceremony at the Two Fish in a Barrel Café on Dundonald Avenue.
The same amount will be presented to the Anguilla Enhancement Project in February.
The campaign typically seeks donations of $1 for every pound of trash collected, with this year’s total also including contributions through its GoFundMe page and other donations.
Karen Plianthos, who founded the initiative, said 24 guests attended the cheque presentation, including children who had helped with the campaign.
“It was nice to have a real mix of people who took part in collecting the trash, those who donated money towards the campaign, and people like Ann Hyde, the former director of Keep Bermuda Beautiful.
“The children who attended did a little talk about what they enjoyed about Cash Trash Bash as well.
“It was lovely to have so many people committed to creating a better Bermuda on and around our oceans.”
