April 4, 2010

bermuda press confernece apr 2010Today the police held a press conference in relation to the wave of shootings, and brought out all the brass. In attendance was Acting Commissioner of Police Mike Jackman, Superintendent Antoine Daniels, Acting Governor David Arkley and Minister of Public Safety Senator Lt. Col. David Burch.

Colonel Burch, known for his no nonsense style, mentioned again the public’s campaign to “blow up his inbox” at the press conference. It had previously been reported that Colonel Burch had received in excess of 700 emails from people in relation to the recent gun crimes.

Colonel Burch stating “I am not a policeman, never been one and at this stage of life I am unlikely to become one“. He went on to say that he respects the expert advice given to him by the senior and experienced members of the Bermuda Police force, and finished with “I am not going to replace their expert advice with that of the general public who watches CSI. I watch CSI too.

The Colonel is of course referring to the very popular television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which features forensic experts solving crimes.

Colonel Burch went on to state that he is actively working on strengthening gun laws, mentioning that Parliament may be recalled to debate the issue, and possibly make legislative changes.

He also commended members of the public who have come forward to assist the police.

    Greetings Senator Lt. Col. Burch,
My name is Erva P E Wilson (I go by the name of Paia) and I am writing from the United States of America. I am the daughter of Erva P E Burch Garnette who was William Gomes Spencer Darrel Burch and Ileen C. (Mallary)Burch’s daughter of Bermuda. My cousins are Moria and Graham Bean of Bermuda. My dear uncle, William Alexander Burch of Pittsfield, Massachusetts (USA) recently passed. He periodically traveled to the island. I am trying to keep our Bermudian heritage alive in the lives of our children so they will know their people. If you are a relative or have any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
