Hurricane Igor Powers Up, TS Julia Forms

While another storm formed behind right it, Hurricane Igor quickly strengthened into a powerful category 4 hurricane today (Sept 12), with the US National Hurricane Center saying it could strengthen into a category 5 tomorrow.

As of 11pm, Igor has maximum sustained winds of 150 mph (240 kmh). The hurricane is not a threat to land at this time, however the Weather Channel said that Bermuda should monitor the progress of Hurricane Igor as it could pass close by this weekend.

Meanwhile in the far eastern Atlantic a tropical depression formed this morning, and strengthened into Tropical Storm Julia late tonight, becoming the tenth tropical storm of the 2010 season. Julia has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, and is moving in a westerly direction at 12 mph. The Hurricane Center says that Julia could turn into a Hurricane on Tuesday.
