67251_10150279373975321_684800320_14807946_5597865_nBermudian author Cha’Von K. Clarke has released a new book dealing with the taboo subject of incest.

Also the author of ‘I Have Spoken’ and ‘Streets are Listening…God is Watching,’ Ms. Clarke is active in the community having been involved in various projects including the teen talk show Youth Talk, the teen news program Fast Forward, JaKoMa Entertainment, DRC Youth Committee, Youth on the Move and more.

Ms. Clarke explains that “Incest has been noted as the most common form of child abuse and yet it is an extremely under-reported crime. This type of abuse and betrayal of trust has the most potential for psychological and emotional harm to children. Incest has been called a violation of the child where he or she lives with a person who has trust and authority over them. A child molested by a stranger can run home for help and comfort. A victim of incest cannot.”

“Some of the social problems arising from incest are alcoholism, drug addiction, prostitution and promiscuity. Eating or sleeping disorders, migraines and back or stomach pains are just a few of the physical consequences that a victim may suffer. Food, sex, alcohol and/or drugs reduce painful memories of the abuse and banish reality temporarily. If a victim perceives obesity to be unattractive, and if she believes she was abused because she was pretty, she may overeat in a unwise attempt to protect herself from added sexual assault. Bulimia is a way of acting out that feeling. Anorexia is another form of self-punishment, eventually leading to the ultimate self-victimization, suicide.”

Synopsis of ‘ONYX…Rekindling’:

After years of promiscuity, Sarai “Baby” Gibbons is forced to face a hybrid of family secrets. She learns more about herself in just a few months of therapy than she had in her entire lifespan. With a new set of eyes, Baby is confused and realizes that only God can help her set a new path towards peace of mind and a sense of purpose.

The story starts with Baby’s view of her life as a young girl and the unhealthy relationship she shared with her older brother, Patrais aka “Tray”. Once Tray leaves home for college in Texas, Baby is hungry for attention from the opposite sex and begins to invite men into her life.

Months before her thirtieth birthday, a psychologist asked Baby to recap her accomplishments. First, Baby feels depressed and helpless as she realizes that much of her life was filled with bad choices and behaviour but eventually she learns how to live with a dark past and mind-altering confusion that has left her questioning who, why, how, what, when and where? The answers to those questions just never seemed to matter until that day. Is Baby ready to hear the truth? Are you?

The book is available locally at the Book Mart, available online in Kindle form here, and you can also order a copy by emailing ckcbooks “at” live.
