Murder Charge: Former Bermuda Prosecutor

December 8, 2010

Former Bermuda prosecutor Lloyd Rayney was arrested today [Dec 8] in Australia, and has charged with the murder of his wife Corryn. He is expected to face Perth Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.

Mrs Rayney was last seen in August 2007, and her body was found in Kings Park days later. Australian Police named Mr Rayney as a suspect in the murder, but he vehemently denied any involvement in the death of his wife and launched defamation action against the Australian Police.

The Australian media reports that Detective Superintendent Paul Coombes refused to officially name Mr Rayney as the man charged, saying a QC had advised against publicly naming him because of the pending defamation lawsuit.

“West Australian police have today arrested a West Australian man in relation to the murder of Supreme Court registrar Corryn Rayney that occurred on or about Tuesday, August 7, 2007,’’ Det-Supt Coombes said. “This person has been charged with one count of wilful murder. The arrest was made this morning by officers from the Major Crime Squad. The arrest occurred without incident and the man was immediately taken to crime headquarters at Curtin House.”

Lloyd Rayney lived in Bermuda in 2003/2004, and was employed by the Department of Public Prosecutions.
