Man Charged With Drug & Firearm Offences
28-year-old Jakai Harford appeared in Magistrates Court this morning [Jan 26], and was charged with a number of drug and firearm offences.
He was charged with: Possession of cocaine with intent to supply $14,900 worth, Second charge possession of $5,300 cannabis intent to supply, Possession of drug equipment, Possession of firearm alternately handling a firearm and Possession of ammunition alternatively handling ammunition. All offences were said to occur in Pembroke parish on January 8th, 2011
Mr Harford – of Mission Lane, Pembroke – was arrested on January 8th, and at the time the Police said they found suspected crack cocaine, cannabis, a large quantity of cash and a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol in the residence.
He has been held in Police custody since the time of his arrest, which is allowable under amendments made last year to the Firearms Act.
At the time of Mr Harford’s arrest, Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said “The Bermuda Police Service can confirm the arrest of a 28 year old male from Pembroke Parish for Firearms & Drugs offences. Police firearms officers executed a search warrant at a Pembroke residence during the evening of Saturday 8th January, 2011. The investigation is being led by the Serious Crime & Drugs Units of the Bermuda Police Service. During the course of the search, officers found quantities of suspected crack cocaine, cannabis, and a large quantity of cash. Also found during the course of the search was a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol.”
Mr Harford was remanded in custody, and will reappear at a later date.

THough we need to reduce the demand in order to stop the supply. Until someone can solve this problem then more and more will keep coming in. We need to focus on the addicts as well not just the dealers you know. Economics 101 fam. It is a common trait for citizens to be lead by the media and the stories they publish. Having a tendency to blow stories out of proportion because like many other corporations the media are a business if no one purchases their papers they will not make any means. Let’s be for real there have been many stories posted in media outlets that are inaccurate.
I’m not saying this story is right or wrong. What I am saying is that aspects of stories tend to get blown out of proportion. And the truth rarely prevails.
So before you judge this story take into consideration whether the facts are based on hard core evidence.
Furthermore everyone is innocent until proven guilty however in Bermuda immediately after a story is published the party involved is considered guilty automatically-which is quite sad! The media play a huge role in the influence it has on the citizens of Bermuda! We don’t know the in’s and out’s of this particular situation most of you all commenting are outsiders looking in.
Lastly the question of whether someone is guilty or not , is not one that is addressed in a criminal trial in Bermuda’s legal system.

First of all Bubbles, how am I quick to judge when I made a general statement on observations I have made from long time?
lol at ‘trying times’…. well Bubbles, where i was raised in Bermuda people have been living in trying times from day 1 way before this recession and the one before.. Just because hardtimes have started to reach the middle class does not mean things were always peachy for all Bermudians.
Most my life I have seen people glorify drug dealers and violent persons (before the spirialing gun violence) in my area. yet when they see you doing something positive either no comment or some condescending words. My issue is that in the Black community, especially young black people, we tend to glorify negativity and tend to ignore positivity… which in my opinion is the part of the reason why we are in the situation we are in.

Finally, someone that understands LOL This guy has been charged with an offence; he has not been proven guilty for this offence yet. Until such time, then, it is alleged that he was in possession of the items he has been charged for. Correct? If he is found guilty by a court of law then he will do his time and there will be another off the street. No one in their right mind wants the gun violence to continue and in fact I don’t think they want it anymore either, but it’s gone to far and beyond their control so it continues and noone really knows why anymore. It’s not about strength to be productive and they do have their own businesses LOL, they sell drugs; it’s a business. Criminal as it may be it’s their business. Remember Goslings use to sell rum and it was illegal, do you rememeber that? In any event, returning to the topic at hand, my youth won’t be exposed but their youth will and the youth they have mentored per say. So those are the individuals we really need to focus on as they have been prepped and are ready to take over the reign……. Maybe we can use a different strategy in high profile cases, is there a way that this guy can have influence on someone or situation? If we continue to think and do the same things we will continue to get the same result. Let’s do something different this time around. FOR CHANGE!

this is the problem-
giving shout outs or support to ‘keep your head up’ essentially is condoning their behavior even if you don’t mean to. no, i don’t know you or what you may have done to try and get your friend out of this negative lifestyle. but let me put it like this- if you had a nephew, for example, and you caught him doing wrong and sent him in to his mother for her to deal with him, how do you think he would perceive things if on his way in to face the music you gave him a huge hug, smiled, and told him “keep your head up, i got love for you!”…..? he’s probably going to think you’re on his side and/or that what he did to begin with was already forgotten and forgiven even before any punishment was given. by affirming your love for someone right in the middle of them doing wrong, they get the wrong message and it is perceived as support for their activities, despite what other things you might say to them. it’s basic psychology and i don’t think people understand how harmful their ‘support’ is when it’s given in such a way. you have good intentions, but you’re doing them no good. saying one thing to them but then sending mixed messages like this does not accomplish what you’re trying to do.
the message that tells them is that “i’m cool, the system is against me but i still got love from my people!”
i don’t know what is said or done privately, no doubt. but publicly the message you’re telling these guys- whether you realize it or not- is that it’s ‘all good.’
you should be shoulder to shoulder with those who are admonishing these guys! but that’s the problem with bermudians and these young guys- there is no shame in doing wrong. no embarassment in going before the courts or getting in trouble. it’s become cool for a variety of reasons but a big part IMO is because of the support they get along the way. you’re sending mixed messages even if you don’t mean to.
ever heard of tough love? it means you admonish them for their wrong and keep your distance, forcing them to feel like an outsider for the wrongs they’ve done. if you have that much love for these guys then you can quietly visit them in prison. they need to feel the pain of what they did, not mixed messages. and before anybody jumps on me, yes- i have loved ones who have done time. and they were ashamed and felt the pain of what they did because that is how their family and close friends handled them, publicly and privately. i don’t know what’s happened in private but in public it’s very obvious that such shout outs are perceived as support for their actions.

Guess what, times have changed, I am fromteh old school too, but this is not working. My husband’s mother felt the same as you and abanoned him when he make a bad choice and he ended up doing a lot worse, I made mistakes and lots of them and my mother never gave up on me and through that love and SUPPORT, I rose up and became a responsible person in the community and to my family.

I’m truly amazed at the amount of ignorant people who are encouraging this “man” to keep his head up. And if it sounds like I’m judging him, than that’s too bad. We (the sane minded people) are judging his actions which have brought criminal charges upon his head. No one is saying he’s a horrible person who we hate and despise. We are saying he is a person who has been charged with selling drugs, and charged with keeping a weapon is not a person who makes good decisions. All of us make bad decisions.Some effect just ourselves and our families, others effect a whole community, a whole generation. When people can allegedly make such terrible choices with no care for repercussions or who seems oblivious to the harm it causes, than I will see him for his bad deeds and if convicted say that he deserves all the time he gets. Hailing this “man” up only shows us how far we have to go and how far gone logic is.
So if you had a son/daughter that was caught on these charges would you stop loving him/her…..truly ‘keep your head up’ is just a sign that someone still cares about you. No one is condoning anything, and when/if found guilty then he will do his time and even then we will continue to tell him to keep his head up. I think it’s amazing that so many people think we should just turn our backs and act like this boy doesn’t exist. Well I won’t, and I will continue to tell him keep his head up. If that make me ignorant, then so be it. But God taught us all to love. He loved a thief, he loved a prostitute and he loved murderers and he told us to follow his example. Nuff said

We live in a day and age where the person with the money, affords the best liar, who then tries to convince the judge who’s lies are the most factual. There is so much going on in our little island home in such a short space of time, it boggles the mind. Where were our elected official/experts when Bermuda was going thru the turbulent times? Open eyes people, things can only get worse. Many a case has been bungled by either contaminated evidence or contaminated lies/truth. Either way we look at this crisis, we have all made this little society what it is today. ALL OF US HAVE CONTRIBUTED ONE WAY OR THE OTHER TO THE STATE OF OUR PRESENT AFFAIRS.
