Guilty Plea: $200 Check Became $2,200

Maintenance man Dennis Landy, 58, pleaded guilty to three counts involving cheque fraud today [Feb 8] in Magistrates Court.

He was said to have been paid $200 on a Butterfield Bank cheque, with the payment being for work done at the Somerset Laundromat. Going online to review his chequing account, the owner of the Laundromat, found that the cheque had been presented to the bank and had been cashed for $2,200.

Magistrate Warner heard that Mr Landy had convictions going back to 1975, when he was 23. These included offences involving theft, burglary, and drugs.

The Magistrate bailed him for $2,000 him, ordered a Social Inquiry Report, and directed Mr Landy to re-appear on 22 March 2011.
