Photos & Results: IAAF World Athletics Day

Over 120 athletes turned out yesterday [May 21] for the IAAF World Athletics Day. BTFA President Donna Watson, “The BTFA had the IAAF World Athletics Day which was hosted by The Flyers Track club. It was a wonderful event with over 120 athletes participating.”

“We had children from the age of 4 years old up to masters athletes. This is an annual event and is held in most of the countries that come under the IAAF. There was a mascot race that was won by the BELCO Bird. There were a few outstanding performances with Shaquille Dill our silver medalist at Carifta running a PB in the 800m in a time of 1:50.18. We had the nursery school children running the 200m and this was definitely a crowd pleaser with many family members cheering on their little children.

“Stephen Ellen participated in the 1500m and he and Shawn Herman who will both be running the Bermuda Day marathon had a race to the finish with Stephen just barely beating Shawn to the finish line Stephen is not only preparing for the marathon but also will be traveling and competing in the Island Games.”

“We had several of our Carifta athletes competing and continually putting in good performances, Kyrah Scraders winning the 200m and the 400m in good times. Justin Donawa jumping good in the Long Jump and Triple Jump. Jaquan Symonds a good time in the 100m and Kyle Webb in the 200m preparing for the World Youth Championships. Jeneko Place runnng the 400m in a good time of 49.71 as he prepares for the World Youth Championships.”

“Andrea Jackson who is preparing the the NACAC Combined events that will be taking place in Kingston, Jamaica May 26th & 27th with Shianne Smith competed in several events at the meet. We also had several athletes competing for a place in our CAC Age Group event which will be held in Tortola, BVI in July. Each athlete has to compete in several events and when Bermuda competed in this event in 2009 Bermuda placed 4th overall and Jordan Bascome won her age group,” concluded Ms Watson.
