Guilty: Stealing $5K From Marketplace

November 14, 2011

57-year-old Gary Clayton Dillas, a former Marketplace Front End manager, pleaded guilty in Thursday [Nov.10] to stealing $5,000 from his former employers.

The offence was committed on 30th July 2011 when Mr Dillas was seen counting cash in the Church Street store’s cash room. Mr Dillas’s job did not normally entail counting cash, but since coming back to work after suffering a serious stroke in June 2010, he was known to take frequent breaks and often did so by sitting in the cash room.

On this occasion, Mr Dillas explained to another Manager that he was taking a break, and was helping out by counting the cash. On 1st August, a teller from HSBC called the Marketplace to inform them that $5,000 in $50 bills was missing from the night deposit bag of 30th July.

When accosted by Marketplace’s Vice-President for Operations, Mr Dillas admitted taking the money. He admitted the same to arresting Police and when Police searched his residence, they found and seized $1,800 which was said to be part of the stolen $5,000.

DPP Prosecutor Susan Mulligan asked for an order for restitution and pointed out that in such breach of trust situations, an immediate custodial sentence was the normal punishment.

On Dillas’s behalf, lawyer Peter Farge asked for a Social Inquiry Report. Senior Magistrate Archie Warner ordered an S.I.R., granted bail of $2,000 with one Surety, and set a return and sentencing date of 15th December 2011.
