Video: Wells Scores Game Winner In U.K.
[Updated with video] The day after the National Team put on a strong performance to defeat Barbados 2-1, Bermuda’s footballers continued to excel, with Bradford City striker Nahki Wells scoring the game winner in today’s [Nov.12] F.A Cup match in the U.K.
Wells, 21, has been part of the Bermuda National Team for their recent CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier games, and scored a goal in Bermuda’s 2-1 win over Trinidad & Tobago last month.
He did not return to Bermuda for last night’s game due to his club’s important match with Rochdale today, however Bermuda coach Devarr Boyles previously told the Bermuda Sun that Wells would be brought back for the second match against Barbados on Monday [Nov.14].
The former Dandy Town star scored in the 85th minute to give his team the 1-0 win over League One Rochdale, and earned Bradford City a place in tomorrow’s F.A Cup.
The Telegraph & Argus reports that, “Supersub Nahki Wells scored one of the best goals seen at Valley Parade for years to fire City into the second round of the FA Cup.
“The Bermudan smashed a long-range screamer six minutes from time to sink Rochdale as the Bantams claimed their second League One scalp in a week.”
The live blog from Bradford City this morning said, “What a strike from Wells! The Bermudan striker is allowed to run at a retreating visiting defence before letting rip with a fine effort from around 25 yards the whistles past Lucas and into the corner.”
Nahki Wells younger brother Rico is following in his footsteps, having recently been asked to train with Hull City FC.
Update 3.23pm: Rochdale manager Steve Eyre described Nahki Wells’ goal as “the goal of the round, if not the season.”
Mr Eyre said, “That goal was as good as I have ever seen – certainly good enough to win this cup-tie. It must have been the goal of the round, if not the season. We would have loved it if it had been one of our players who had scored it.”
“When you are on the receiving end of a 35-yard shot into the top corner, especially so late in the game, you feel hard done by, so I feel for our team and the fans.
Speaking on Wells, Bradford assistant manager Steve Parkin said, “The kid is capable of that and does it in training, generating great pace on the ball. To score a goal like that was very special for him.”
“He could be a really dangerous player for us for the rest of the season. He is a good lad with a really good demeanour. We are pleased that he is playing for his country in World Cup qualifiers, but when Bermuda are playing friendlies we prefer him to be here instead.”
Update #2: Bradford City’s website posted a post game interview with Nahki Wells, in which he said , “We have a big squad at the football club – there are a lot of good strikers here – so it has been hard to get into the team so far.”
“I just have to try and bundle my way up the perking order here. If I can continue to do what I’ve done today coming off the bench then hopefully I can earn myself some more game time.
“Parky (Steve Parkin) and the gaffer have been full of support for me in training and giving me words of praise and advice.
“I’ve been hitting the ball well in training recently and it was nice to be able to show what I can do with twenty-five minutes or so today.”
Speaking about the superb strike itself, Wells was in no doubt that it was right up there with the very best he had produced so far in his career. “It is definitely one of the best goals I have ever scored,” Wells added.
“I have scored some good ones back in Bermuda, but this is certainly up there with one of my very best. To score here (at the Coral Windows Stadium) and to score it right in front of our home end, it is definitely one of my best.
“I just nipped it off one of their midfielders about ten yards from goal and then just kept running with it. It just seem to keep opening up for me and good runs made by my team-mates allowed me to keep dribbling with it.
“I think I had about five of them (his team-mates) screaming at me for a pass but I just said ‘this is the time to hit it’.
“Once I hit it, I knew it was going in.”

Bermy doing it big all over. Guess all that money poured into football wasn’t all that bad.
Maybe you should get a grip.
Nothing to do with Bermuda.
Sorry Terry, that’s where you show your juvenile bias. This has everything to do with Bermuda. This young talent learned his football in Bermuda’s youth leagues and with various National squads. Got his break by being recommended through the Bda National Program; and now he is making it as a professional scoring fantastic goals like this one. Take a deep breath my brother–clear your head—think before speaking. Grow up!
Great news! Great to see a young Bermudian doing so well overseas! Congrats to the Wells and Simmons families, BFA, his teachers and coaches and all those involved for supporting this young man and helping to see the big picture.
What a goal and great atmosphere I’m so glad to witness such a moment for Nahki Wells. As a Bermudian it felt good to watch him live out his dreams on such a high stage this is a perfect example how you can make dreams come true through sacrifice and hard work. I met with chairman of Bradford and he wants to start a supporters club so let’s get behind and support our young people. What a day and goal I will remember for life.
Congrats young man. Glad to see some good news on here for once. Hope to see much more from him in the future
Congratulations, Nahki. That goal was a beauty! Keep up the good work, we are all proud of you, and we know that you have tons of potential.
