Bermuda Win 2 – 1 Against Trinidad!

October 7, 2011

[Updated: Scroll to bottom for latest. Bermuda wins!! Final score 2 -1. Bermuda's Antwan Russell scored in the 53rd minute, Nahki Wells in the 63rd minute, and Trinidad scored in the 81st minute]

We caught up with Nahki Wells, Khano Smith and Coach Devarr Boyles during a recent training session, and spoke with them about their preparation for tonight’s [Oct.7] World Cup Qualifier match against Trinidad & Tobago.

Nahki Wells said, “It’s always special to play for your nation, in front of Bermudians but it’s all about 3 games, you need a maximum of 9 points. That’s what we’re striving for, we can’t accept anything else.”

Khano Smith said, “Being the Captain of the country is something as a player no matter what country you are from. You always, as a little boy, dream of being Captain of your team leading them out in an important game like this.”

Interviews with Nahki Wells, Khano Smith and Devarr Boyles:

Coach Devarr Boyles said, “Everything is a ball. I mean, we just have to find our ways of managing the ball, regaining possession of the ball and using the ball. So for us its a matter of management of that. Management of ball both in possession and the ball possession. So, everything for me revolves around the ball.”

“Trinidad is a big team. So if they start with 11 then I think they’re strong. So, you know we’re anticipating a big match again. We’re missing a few players so it balances so far.”

“Like in this match obviously Roger Lee has been well-documented, he has a broken leg. In this match, Reggie Thompson is not available. So, you know I guess it does equalize, there are big players for us, and big players for them. At the end of the day, you start with 11. Hopefully, we end with 11 and with a positive result.”

“We’re hoping that as the match in Trinidad was powerfully warm for both for the host country and ourselves, the game and time was very, very slow, very deliberate and the game was managing the ball,” continued Coach Boyles.

“So we didn’t have the ball, we have to find ways of managing the space and I think we did that. So now at home, we’re looking for a little bit more penetration, and penetration means chances, and chances hopefully means opportunities to finish and if we finish well, then we put ourselves in a good position.”

The Bermuda team training:

“The players are looking for the support of family, friends and everyone in between, the country. So we encourage you to come out and support the boys.” concluded Coach Boyles.

Bermuda will take on Trinidad & Tobago this evening [Oct.7] at 8:00pm. Bermuda’s first match-up against Trinidad and Tobago was held in Port of Spain on September 2nd, with Bermuda losing 1 -0. They then played Guyana on September 6th, losing 2 – 1, with Bermuda’s goal scored by Khano Smith.

Update Oct 8: To clarify as we being hammered with complaints over the lack of video – we were restricted by the BFA from filming any video at all.

Update Oct.8: FIFA has termed this game the ‘Match of The Day’ and said:

The tiny Atlantic island of Bermuda has a way of getting up for games against their big neighbors Trinidad and Tobago.

They nearly sent the Soca Warriors out of South Africa 2010 qualifying on the strength of an inspirational home win, and many of those same players – John Nusum and captain Khano Smith in particular – repeated the dose in qualifying on Friday.

The Bermuda’s so-called Gombey Warriors took advantage of a T&T side missing captain and talisman Kenwyne Jones to pull off an impressive 2-1 win and get their campaign back on track with a first win.

Suffering their first loss of the qualifiers, the Trinidadians lose top spot in Group B to Guyana, with the resurgent Bermudans charging just three points behind them.

With only the top team going through to the next phase, the fancied Trinidadians will need to re-find their form and winning ways when they take on basement-dwellers Barbados on Tuesday.

Update Oct.8: The BFA’s report follows below:

Bermuda’s National World Cup football team made a remarkable come back when they defeated Trinidad & Tobago 2-1, in game three of their FIFA World Cup CONCACAF Qualifiers Group 2 match played in front of 3,000 supporting fans at the National Sports Centre.

Striker, Antwan Russell put Bermuda ahead 1-nil in the 53rd minute after he scored from inside the six-yard box. Russell received a perfect pass from midfield mistro, Taurean Manders who caused havoc all night long. Trinidad knocked on Bermuda’s on door minutes later, when Stern John had a good shot on goal and only to have it saved by goalkeeper Freddie Hall.

Nahki Wells made it 2-nil in the 63rd minute when he took a left footed shot that was delivered with pace giving the Trinidad goalkeeper no chance for a save. Bermuda players and fans erupted with joy after going up by two goals. However there was plenty of time remaining in the match.

Bermuda and Trinidad made substitutions during the 68th minute of play. Trinidad’s Kevaughn Connell replaced Osei Telesford and Bermuda’s Damon Ming on for Lashon Dill. 11 minutes later or in the 79th minute Chris Caisey came on for Nahki Wells.

With only 9 minutes remaining in the match or in the 81st minute, Kevin Molino tapped in the ball as though it was heading for the goal post. Bermuda made their third and final substitution when Seion Darrell came on for Taurean Manders who received an ankle injury. Manders was taken out of the game for precautionary masseurs, otherwise he would have continued his dominance in the midfield.

Meanwhile, this victory for Bermuda was well deserved. From the outset, the home team displayed passion, pride and desire to win this game at all cost. The coaching staff did their homework, as they had positions to fill.

John Barry Nusum showed his versatility and experience as he played an outstanding role as central defender. In addition, Tyrell Burgess at right back played by far his best international match for his country. And LaShun Dill played in the midfield role, which worked wonders for the team and himself.

These three technical moves were made by Head coach Devarr Boyles and his coaching staff, and it paid dividends. The decision to have three of their front line players in the defense and defensive midfield position help support their move. Overall it was a collective team effort from the starting line up, substations and Bermuda playing the 12th man.

Today the squad will have a recovery session at Saltus pool. They will resume their training session Sunday morning 9:30am at BFA field, followed by Monday morning session 9:30am at BFA field and at the National Sports Centre from 5pm – 6pm that afternoon.

In the other Group 2 match it was Guyana 2 vs Barbados 0. This means Bermuda must win their match Tuesday night against Guyana at the National Sports Centre starting 8pm.

bfa why can we not watch this game live l want to know!

  13. mike says:

BFA could have showed the game live on local T.V for $10-$15 dollars for the people who couldn’t make the game or who live overseas. I call that utterly dumb and ignorant!!!

are there not any people that run Bermuda aware of the fact that this would be a really good way to bring people together rather than thinking about ticket sales? Like really, if you look in the stands in the bernews latest pic(which l am surprised Larry even let you take) you will see the PLP and all their cabinet in glory acting like a bunch of spoiled FRICKING brats. Its like Rome all over again!

    • James says:

Wrong–go to the stadium and pay to support Bermuda!

      • mike says:

Some people can’t make it to the game for whatever reason. BFA still could have charged for live coverage on T.V.

  24. liars says:

l kinda hope Bermuda loses so we can have a big investigation into all the monies that have gone missing for real. Bermuda sucks guys, there 189 in world rankings…thats not far off the bottom of the world. If you go to the rankings you would see when the UBP was in power Bermuda was 85th in the world. That just shows you yet another statistic that truly shows how poor and stupid this current situation really is. When they are unprofessional at the top, it trickles down. like they say, sHyt runs down hill not up hill. please lose

    • James says:

Of course you do because you would like to see money diverted to your sport of choice. And by the way where have you ever read that money went missing? 34. The Truth says:

And who said miracles don’t happen. Trinidad must have had their under 16 squad plating. I wouldn’t get to excited Trinidad must have played poorly..

    • Thoughts says:

Or maybe Bermuda played just that good.

    • mixitup says:

Don’t get too besides yourself. You sound just like the bully making excuses why he got beat up.

    • Real Talk (original) says:

“must have played poorly” suggests that you weren’t actually in attendance and didn’t actually watch the game.

It was a good match and Bermuda played very well up until about the last 20 minutes which were nail-biting for the home crowd. Please don’t take away from this victory, especially if you didn’t actually witness it first hand.

Well done guys, looking forward to big things on Tuesday night as well.

  35. Thoughts says:

    Well Done BERMUDA!!!

Does this mean Mr. Gary Moreno will be in hiding for a couple of days. lolol

  36. Win is a win! says:

Very proud of our national soccer team, but I still feel that we could have played better… The passing especially left a lot to be desired, but when the passing game did finally improve, we were able to score two great goals!!! Well done!!! Still not sure why we cannot have a scoreboard/clock at international games, it looks very unprofessional! Oh great defending also!

  37. BermudaD says:

Fantastic result – well done BERMUDA!

  38. Downsized says:

Congrats to all involved, well done Gombey Warriors we’re all proud of you … well maybe not all of us as some of these comments are truly sad/pathetic. I have no problem with people putting a foot in the a$$ of the Govt and or BFA if it’s warranted I do as well but come on this is about our National Squad vs Trinidad’s for goodness sake not the Govt, Dr. Brown etc!!

Again Well done Bermie, wish I could have been there, fair points about why this couldn’t have gone out live via TV or Internet, I know the BFA don’t like to do so because it’s felt that people will not show up and support the team. Still not everyone could fit into the NS if they did go and yes this could still have made them money by having it available as pay per view. Just Saying.

  39. Where's The Support says:

Congratulations Bermuda, you guys played well and got a deserved victory! Forget these Internet chat room/comment posting junkies and nay sayers that have only negative thoughts and comments for you and remain focused on the pure love and support of us that believe in you and our country! Come on Bermuda, let’s stand up for something that our youth are doing positive and give them 100% support! I was there last night and have to say as a nation our support is lacking and we need to stop being so uptight and make some noise! The trinidadians were making more noise then us during the game except when we scored. I’ll be there again on Tuesday, but this time with a drum or some noise maker that I’ll be playing for 105 minutes straight!! Bring the noise bermuda and again congrats!

  40. andre says:

    Proud! Proud! Proud!

  41. Real Talk (original) says:

Well done Bermuda, you did your country proud. The game doesn’t need to be televised, folks need to come out and support our national team.

    Job well done.

Hopefully the next time the BFA can sort out the crazy lines at the gate (at 8pm there were more people outside in the line than inside due to the ridiculous SINGLE gate they had open for the grandstand…

Somebody might also want to slip the BFA a copy of God Save the Queen… it’s not my favourite either, but it is what it is and it was embarrassing to be subjected to a whole minute of the Star Spangled Banner before somebody pulled the plug and the game had to continue WITHOUT Bermuda’s national anthem…

  42. FIFA Regulation says:

Just so that it can be clarified, FIFA reguluations state that no game can be broadcast live or streamed until the the tickets sold is over 75%. This is NOT a BFA regulation this is a worldwide regulation. I hope that this clears this up.
Additionally apologies have been made for the lines there were some severe technical issues with the ticket vendor that are being sorted out for Tuesday’s match against Guyana.
Thank you for all the support that all those in attendance gave to the Bermuda National Team. Hope to see you all out on Tuesday when we continue our quest to the next round.

    • @ Fifa Regs:

Thanks for the clarification regarding showing the matches live, So with this knowledge I can only imagine that Tuesday’s match will surely be being shown live then as there will certainly be at least 75% tickets sold either online or prior/during the match (so long as there’s no threat of rain of course).

The obvious question now is if the BFA is adhering to FIFA’s 75% of tickets sold before showing live matches what is the ticket allocation/capacity for the National Stadium?

If this is being based on the ‘Seated’ Capacity which I believe is approx 4,800/5,000 – 1,800+ ? for the Grandstand and approx 3,000 + ?(very Cramped)for the Eastern bleachers.

Or are the BFa basing it on the capacity of the stadium where fans are allowed to stand in the passage ways, lower field/track area as well? If so this would raise it to approx 7,500 + There is/used to be a FIFA stipulation that all fans must be ‘Seated’ for World Cup Matches.
If it is the latter then it is very difficult to see where live matches are to be shown regularly though they have done so in the not too distant past.

Any BFA officials willing to clarify their position would help, maybe Bernews could ask as well! I will be there on Tuesday night but there are many that wont/can’t be there.

  43. wondering says:

well done Bermuda……..unless there were some copyright infringements against televising it….we have administrations in ALL areas of Bermuda who profess thinking outside of the box but they also couldn’t tell you what a box looked like in order to think outside of it!!. the people who will come to see it live will come and those who won’t go will in some instances say ‘ ” I missed all that action?!?!” and show up…pay per view…it was the way forward when Mike Tyson fights were televised a t BAA and ppl paid 50 dollars to go and see 45 seconds of a bust a$$. c’mon BDA officials…..free up ya mind so ppl can support their teams.

  44. your joking says:

For all the hard time I give football and cricket players…This was a great win..hope they will build on it…as for the wrong nation anthem……really?..lay off the elephants on tuesday

  45. Roger Sherratt says:

Just a few facts firstly for the naysayers. FIFA world rankings – Trinidad and Tobago 80, Bermuda 189. CONCAF rankings – Trinidad and Tobago 7, Bermuda 31. Population of T&T 1.25 million, Bermuda 68,000. Let’s get things in perspective. This was a fabulous win by our Bermuda team. Every player gave 100%+ with tremendous support from 3,000 very enthusiastic and noisy but well behaved supporters. This was great match by any measure and we should all be proud of our boys.

Yes, there were a few technical problems with tickets sales up at Cedarbridge but the delayed start allowed most of us to catch most of the game. The problems will no doubt be sorted out by Tuesday for the match against Guyana, as will the National Anthem.

For anyone apprehensive about the behaviour of local football fans the atmosphere last night was electric and everyone was well behaved. Our fans had to be worth at least one goal for the home team. What we need now is less destructive criticism and even more fans showing up to support our team on Tuesday night. Based on last night’s performance attendance should double for Tuesday’s game.

  46. Surious says:

Nice work Bermuda. Nice to see the young bies playing well! Keep the tempo high for Guyana next week.
One question for BSA- why not televise this? Collaborate and come to some sort of contractual agreement with the governments channel, or any of the other local channels. Maybe thats how you can generate some revenue?? Or, if that is too complicated…perhaps at least a highlight reel for the local tv stations/island stats/bernws/the RG??
Come on! Guys gotta catch up to the 21st century!! This stuff has got to be televised!!

  47. bernews says:

As far as TV, check out ZBM’s next broadcast for highlights. We saw their cameraman at the game, and he looked like he got some good footage.

    • @ Bernews

See post above with FIFA REGS Post regarding what is 75% capacity at the national stadium and what it’s based on/calculated. Maybe Bernews can get some answers from the BFA regarding showing these matches live.

  48. important says:

Did BSN record the game? And when will they show the game on their local station?

    • bernews says:

We just checked with the BSN guys…no, they didn’t film it…

  49. Roger Sherratt says:

I believe that ” FIFA Regulation” has answered the question of why we can’t have live TV coverage or live streaming. He has explained that FIFA reguluations state that no game can be broadcast live or streamed until the percentage of tickets sold is over 75% of the total gate. This is apparently a worldwide regulation. I would also imagine that FIFA insists that tickets are NOT sold at the gate, hence having to sell them at Cedarbridge for those, like myself, who didn’t read the notices and decided to turn up at the last minute hoping to purchase tickets at the gate. I won’t make the same mistake Tuesday night – will book them online in good time!

    • @ Mr. Sherratt & FIFA REGS

Actually FIFA REGS point has raised more questions than it has answered. I am reliably informed that the Capacity ‘Seated’ at the NS is 4,000 + as such 3000 + would be approx 75% of tickets sold. It was reported that 3000 + attended Friday nights match so ….??? Having said that it would be nice to get confirmed numbers of actual seats available at the NS.

I would bet that the BFA are reluctant to have the matches televised/broadcast as they rightly would prefer people to come out and support the team and that’s understandable but what will happen should 7,000 fans show up ?? As I had previously mentioned FIFA demands that all fans be seated during matches so will the BFA turn away 2000 + fans at the gate? I doubt it.

There has to be a solution out there? Maybe the numbers don’t tally up to make it worth their while ?? Obviously there would have to be a desire by the BFA and the service providers to undertake this so come on BFA/providers let us know what it will take to provide this service and or is it just not feasible ??

I wasn’t able to attend Friday but I will be there on Tuesday …. many others again will not be able to attend so why not Video Streaming,Radio ?? This is an issue that deserves answers as it could help to raise extra revenue something the BFA & NSC could use I’m sure.

  50. Winnie says:

Great job Gombay Warriors, too bad BFA can’t even organise a simple thing properly. It took us exactly one hour from the time I got in line (yes my wife did time it) to get in a statium that was not 100% sold out. Both gates on the grandstand side should have been open from the get go, and the US anthem fiasco, well, well. I saw Shaun Gaoter with his family in line, also something wrong with that picture, while our elected officals have long been given VIP access, smh. Anyways all is well that ends well, question to BFA are you really trying to get people to come out and support the national football programme ? Really ?

    • Winnie,

This has been an ongoing issue with the turnstiles/gates since the stadium was first opened (1986/7) especially when there are large crowds like on Friday night. This really should have been sorted out long ago but Sadly it seems this has not been adequately corrected still.

I would have to say that the main problem is the actual Stadium itself, the gates/turnstiles and the layout of the facility is horrible and nothing short of some serious changes to these plus the approaches will change it.

I will be getting there early but it is one of the main reasons I hate attending events like this at the stadium.

  51. important says:

I heard its comin on bsn tonight @ 1115 is that true?

  52. #Ruthless says:

i was just watching FOX druing the USA and Honduras game, and the man on the TV said Bermuda dropped out, due to financial issues, what is that all about?

  53. better late than never says:

I agree it was an electric performance – must have been those “substations”.

  54. congratulate says:

    great match bermy
