UK Travel Writer Visits Bermuda

The Bermuda Department of Tourism [BDOT] said that that travel writer Simon Calder is in Bermuda this week. Mr. Calder, who arrived on the Island last night [Feb.21], is widely known in the UK and Europe for chronicling his travel forays around the world.

And he’s in Bermuda this week to film his award winning “48 Hours with Simon Calder” for the national UK daily newspaper The Independent. The BDOT said, “The feature aims to showcase the best of Bermuda’s British charm.”

Earlier today Mr. Calder paid a visit to the BDOT offices to chat with the Minister of Business Development and Tourism Wayne Furbert.

Following the visit, Minister Furbert said, “We are simply delighted to welcome Simon to Bermuda. He is a respected and trusted journalist and his travel pieces are very popular in the UK and Europe. We hope that his visit is a fruitful one and we look forward to him sharing the wonders of Bermuda with the rest of the world.”

Mr. Calder’s 48 hours of activity in Bermuda will include a tailored video for The Independent travel channel, a print feature within the title, various podcasts to be hosted online and a number of traffic drivers to encourage people to visit the Island.

During his whirlwind visit, Mr. Calder will get a taste for all that Bermuda has to offer including, dining in some of the Island’s favourite eateries, having a guided tour by the City of Hamilton’s Town Crier, taking a walk down memory lane at the Botanical Gardens to learn about John Lennon’s Double Fantasy album, and taking in the sweet smells at St George’s one-of-a-kind perfumery.

“Essentially, Mr. Calder will uncover all there is to know about Bermuda and return to the UK to share why this Island is considered such a hidden gem in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean,” said the BDOT.

Mr. Calder who has visited the Island before, said, “I am thrilled to be back in Bermuda. There’s nowhere quite like it on earth from the travellers perspective in terms of the way that everything you want is easy to access, whether you want golf, fishing or if you want to amble around the fine City of Hamilton and meet the people.

“I am really enthused about bringing to the British viewers the concept that it is possible to build in a 48-hour stop in Bermuda, and guess what, if my previous visit is anything to go by, if you have been once you simply cannot wait to get back and plan your next trip. It’s a great escape to a land where you can feel the love.”
