In Bermuda Rugby Football Union action at the Warwick Academy School Field yesterday [Mar.24], the Mariners defeated the Teachers 23 – 10. The Mariners got Try’s from Allan Styner and Ed Barnes while Tim Peplow kicked 2 Conversions, 2 Penalties and a Drop Goal. Shauntino Simons scored a Try, kicked a Conversion and a Penalty for the Teachers.

A well organized and motivated Police team defeated a determined Renegades side 21-0.

Police set the tone early up front and powerful forward play set up the platform for some dangerous back play. Police line outs were well executed with Ben Beasley, Adam Richards and the colossal Roedolf van der Westhuizen hooking up with the accurate throwing of hooker Peiter Erasmus.

The quality of first phase ball allowed a dangerous blue back line lead by the mercurial Tommy Edwards and the exceptional Paull Davis with the Police scrum dominating. They stole a ball against van der Westhuizen, broke through three tacklers to crash over from close and the Try was neatly Converted by Tommy Edwards.

Police continued to dominate territorially and some good structured phases that saw the forwards drive close with blocking runs by Nick West and Peter Keirnan. The ball was recycled quickly allowing for some slick handling in the backs to uncork an spritely Ronan Kane who eluded defenders to touch down from a 20m break out wide to make it 12 – 0. Kane then kicked the Conversion to make it 14 – 0.

From the restart Police man of the match, van der Westhuizen broke through the Renegades team. The subsequent build up saw the rampant Police pack recycle well. A quick ball was fed out wide and speedster Guerhardt Lamprecht outpaced the disorganized Renegades cover to score the back breaking try just before the half. Kane’s difficult Conversion all but sealed the game.

The second half saw Police play smart control rugby while the Renegades increasingly became more desperate counter attacking from the shadows of their own posts. Police could not be broken down. A stellar defensive effort led by the ever present Darren Richards and a surprisingly truculent Michael Kane was marred by two crucial injuries to Andre Moolman who suffered a broken ankle and Tommy Edwards suffering from a hamstring injury.
